Why is saying "I love you" such a big deal in American culture?

It should always be a big deal. I only use the L word with my two closest friends

I not only think saying 'I love you' is a big deal in the American culture, I think it should be a big deal in all cultures. Saying it when you don't mean it is like being a hypocrite.
