Why is New York called "the Big Apple"?

I read it is something to do with all the race courses that used to be around New York. Horse jockeys love to race in New York. They nicknamed it the the "Big Apple" cause the purse for winning the races where always huge.

It used to be- because everyone wanted to "take a bite"
