Why Don't Animals (mammals) Have Belly Buttons?

emmamess ~ In My Conscience I Trust ~` 2010/05/08 05:02:14
My cat gave birth to kittens two weeks ago - and after the umbilical cords fell off - the spot where they were attached healed up and there is no sign of a belly button on any mammal I've ever seen - so why don't animals have belly buttons?

Apparently some cats do have belly buttons that you can see... but usually the scar isn't noticeable. Elephants have belly buttons that you can see and many apes do as well...

If we wouldn't cut the umbilical cord of the child it would have a chance to heal off.
You would see just a dot nothing more.

Yep they are there it's just that because of the way they are born they are all outies and the mother licks and chews the umbilical cords till they heal!

They do have them, they just heal up better better than humans.
Maybe tying a knot in the umbilical cord means that a bigger scar is produced?

Marsupials don't have belly buttons, but that's because they don't have umbilical cords.
Only placental animals have belly buttons.

I'm sure it just has something to do with genetics. Simians have em. Canines and felines dont. Etc.

actually Russ I took three years of vetinary medicine so that I could treat my own animals and they all have the umbilical cords and if human mothers took the care that the animals do they would all heal flush!

I've wondered the same thing...I've had cats and kittens and dogs...I know they should have belly buttons but don't....but gorillas do!!! At the Zoo I've even seen gorillas play with their belly buttons.....I guess it's just one of those things that make you go "hmmmmmmm?"

I can't find any trace of a belly button on my dog - or my grown cat. I wonder if ppl didn't tie ours off - if the scar would be smaller. Also - on heavy ppl - their belly button is deep - but even on fat dogs and cats - i never noticed a deep indentation.

they sure are - the mom eats the placenta and chews off the umbilical cord but leaves about an inch on.
