Why do people try to attribute their traits to others?

Common examples:
- People assuming I'm going to be mean to them because they would in my position.
- People assume that others in their age group will also be interested in clubbing a pigeon to death.
- Many people (e.g. my grandfather, parents, many older teachers & sodaheads) saying "Your young, you think you know it all", or the more accurate "When I was your age I thought I knew it all, so clearly you must too".
I know the answer to most of these, and am mostly just interested in your thoughts - Angry rants will also be much appreciated, and try not to be boring :P
