Why do people text? Do they like the little keys? Afraid to talk? Tell me; I am old and I see NO use for it..Thanx in advance

I text because I don't want to get involved in "small talk" - I just state "see you at bla at bla bla oclock" and it's done - Wonderful !!

Conversations are more private.
Quick questions aren't as likely to turn into long conversations.
You can ping someone without interrupting thier activities.
You can text several people at once...privately!
You can take your time answering or replying.

I don't see the point of typing on my phone it kinda like it's a phone hello, but I do do alot is tell people to text me addresses and stuff like that, evan if i'm on the phone with them, I love email much more then phone calls, like easy to the point and you can respond whenever you like. but hate people that send you an email then call you to see if you got the email.

Because the Young think it's cool and defiant and the old try to keep up with their kids

..I'm older than you, so I understand even less...why not talk; it's easier and faster...

i text because i never know what the recipient is up to.... work, sleeping, busy... and i don't live in the same time zone as most of the people in my life.
it's like a little email that they can get when they get to it!!! instead of a phone call which goes to voice mail 75% of the time... then we're stuck in "phone tag land" for days/weeks... when all i really wanted to say was something simple.

my kids (boys, 20 and 16) text more than they actually talk on their phones... i know this because i get the bill and because i see it w/ my own eyes.

i really like this way of communicating when it's about little things like... at 11am, "where do u wanna meet for dinner?" - they can think about it and get back to me when they have a minute.
or like "hoping you're having a great day!" to someone i love - usually w/ an inspiring picture message too.

whatever form of communication works for YOU - use it.
My mom refuses to get a smart phone and doesn't do internet so, we talk instead. it still works!!!

I don't text all that much but if I have a quick question or comment for someone, I text it. When you receive a text you usually respond quickly so it's fast and efficient. Sometimes the phone just takes too long because a quick question turns into a conversation.

I am also old and I see no use in texting. It is impersonal and just makes the people in society further away from each other in terms of "real' experiences.

Texting also allows for saying thiongs that you don't have the balls to do in person- just another way to avoid personal confrontation.

Because I can say what I want to say and be done...no chance to get involved with chit chat when I'm busy but need to relay a message or get an answer to a question. I consider it short emails. I can text my son when I know he's in class before I forget what I needed to tell him and know that he will get it when he gets out of class.

No idea . I am old to understand it , too . I don't like phones . I see them as unexpected interruptions to my life .

i think its more convinient....i can send a little message in a couple seconds and not disrupt my class or a friends class

There's plenty of reasons why, if you want to talk in the same room without talking over other people or say something without someone else butting in on a convo or make an inappropriate joke you can do it without disturbing anyone.
Secondly if you just want to do quick messages rather than calling to ask a quick question you can do it, same thing if you're in the middle of something or a place you can't talk at then text is a much better way to go.

Im with you...I dont even own a cell phone... I have a friend that got a cell phone and she was telling me you can speak into the phone and it will text for you??? makes no sense to me ... if you are going to speak into the phone ... why not just call

I guess I'm old too. I TALK on my phone. I do not understand the fascination with this.

I don't text

I liked it because I could send the message and put the phone down before getting back to whatever I was doing. I didn't have to hold the phone up and try to complete my task one handed.

I see two main reasons for encouraging the public to text. The first is government and industry have known for some time that cellphones cause brain damage and cancer. This caused them to look for less dangerous ways for people to use a cellphone than holding it to the side of their head all day long. Texting cuts microwave exposure.

The second is administrative convenience. The technology to monitor all telephone communications has been around for quite a while, but sifting through long conversations is tedious. Having people consense their communications is a big time saver for intelligence agencies.

Sometimes the persons may be busy and the only way to communicate is through a text or they may be to lazy to talk.

I use it for quick questions/answers and I don't want to talk for any length of time. So, I guess it is to avoid talking on some level. I will go back to a phone call if the texting is getting to involved, then its easier to talk to a person.

It's fun, quick and it's fun.

I prefer texting my friends over calling them because I can't understand them when they speak on the phone! A typical phone conversation with my friends goes something like this
Friend (What s/he sounds like to me.) "Wahwah wahwahwah wahwah."
Me: "What? What?" I can't understand you! --- Hello?!?!"


Other than that I just call people or use face to face communication.

People send texts when they don't want to have a full conversation. This can be handy if you are busy doing something and can't drop what you are doing to have a 15 minute conversation with Chatty Kathy about just one issue. Great for answering a quick question or avoiding someone (without technically avoiding them)

People should text when they are on the go or have no other means of communication. Maybe they don't call because they are low on credit? But face-to-face conversations are always better than what and cell phone can do.

I don't like long drawn out text sessions either.

They have noting to say to one another. They think that texting is communication.

i'm not much with text but when i do its cuz 1. i cant get tru that person by call 2. there some details of the thing i want to tell em and i dont want to mk any mistake of it like the bank account number .. the address etc.
