All of the above and some reasons not listed. They are poor, they were poor growing up, they weren't brought up with values, they are rebelling, they want to look cool, they are greedy and I'm sure I missed something. People steal for all different reasons.

You did not have all choices. I have known people who shoplifted and it was a high for them. They felt they were getting away with something. It became something like hubris. The rules didn't apply to them and they were flaunting the system. Some bragged about it as if it was a badge of honor. This is especially true with young people and groups who want what you have not want the same things you have. Big difference. These people also destroy what you have and think it is funny.

Regardless of the reason, people who steal should be punished and this should be a zero tolerance policy. I am not talking about a kid that steals a candy bar or a truly homeless person who steals a loaf of bread. I refer to criminals such Madhoff and obumbo.

People I've known who steal have seemed to be compelled. It's like being addicted to a drug - they don't seem to be able to stop. And of course, they're self centered people who feel entitled to anything they want, even when things belong to others.
