Why do people cover their mouths when they laugh?

Honestly, I think it's more a self-conscious gesture that's just kind of caught on. I cover my mouth because I don't much like my smile. LOL

Here's something I just read. "In American culture, it is considered rude to not cover your mouth when yawning, or coughing. Its also considered rude to eat with your mouth open. So it stands to reason that a lot of people are hard wired to cover their mouths whenever they open them."
