Why are people so damn ignorant and afraid of opposing views?

Me 2009/08/17 04:08:21
What the hell is wrong with people that they are so afraid to hear viewpoints which differ from their own? Do they not realize that one of the best ways to learn is to challenge ones beliefs? If you refuse to challenge them how can you be sure you will be able to defend them should the need present itself?
Am I the only one who notices this?
You!

Politics is just like any other scenario in the world. People are afraid of what they do not understand and comprehend, so they cling to the few marbles they have remaining rolling around in their heads on the topic.

People live their life in a vacuum almost. They are afraid if anyone is to come along and shatter the pathetic microcosm the have fashioned for themselves, the world will most certainly come to its end. They practice "selective hearing" and filter out everything that does not fit into their worldview.

That puts us into the juggernaut we currently find ourselves in.

it may be that they are afraid of being wrong and they may have to change.

I've come to the conclusion that people are becoming more and more close-minded on here. I have no problem with others disagreeing with my opinions at all. But when they attack me for mine, it's a bit ridiculous. I don't try to change their beliefs, so why are they trying to change mine?

I don't understand the attacks myself. Especially those launched when I am asked for an opinion and give it. Quite a few seem to have a lot of growing up to do.

I agree. I've had more opposition from people with my own beliefs (supposedly) than others even. That's the part that irritates me the most.

Apparently, if you have an opinion on here, you're either wrong, stupid, or both. At least, that's what it's seemed like of late.

I don't have a problem listening to anyone's opinion. My problem is when they think I should change my mind once they present it.

I loved my grandfather but he was like that sometimes. He wasn't afraid to offer his opinion and advice when asked. However, he told me once, when I asked for his advice and opinion, that he wasn't going to give it to me because I never did what he had to say. I respectfully informed him that when I asked him for advice, it was just that. I wasn't asking him to tell me what to do.

I don't change my mind based solely on what others say, I simply give them the opportunity to say it.

Rarely do I. My problem is with when they expect me. I had one SH say they coulnd't understand why I still believed as I did after presenting me with, what they called, "overwhelming facts" to the contrary. They didn't want me to listen, they wanted me to agree with them.
