Several reasons... but it all goes back to when cristianity was first coming to be and the converts from the roman classes were propergating the beliefe that EVERYONE was a child of God rather than the idea that while the roman and greek gods sometimes had a child with a mortal making only some people the children of god(s).

And thus everyone shares a "father" and thus is a brother or sister.

And NOT all nuns are "sisters" you also have reverned mother and mother superior.

If they are like other religions they are considering each other sisters in Christ.

We are all related as children of God... hence all of you are my 'brothers and sisters'... But a consecrated person in the Catholic Church is especially avowed to Christ, a 'bride of Christ'... hence the other women who are also vowed in this way are brides as well--hence they are sisters of Christ. Not blood related.. but related in Spirit.

Nuns actually do a lot of good works. And unselfishly. They assist the poor, the sick, and the dying. My Aunt was a Nun, as is my Second Cousin.

My Aunt was a Teacher, and after she retired did Hospice service for those dying at home. She passed away last year after giving over 80 years of service to her community. A neat lady to be sure.

My Second Cousin is involved with a Homeless Shelter, and working to assist the homeless living on the streets with food, blankets etc.

Something the younger generation seems to have no idea about. Unselfishly giving of youself in the service of God and/or Country.

Not too different than the Military actually. Now that I am retired, I give time to the USO to assist our Military in travelling. Giving back in return for the care and assistance they gave me during my career.

I imagine it has something to do with religious views though. As in God the father, and all his people are brothers and sisters in Christ. It's just the hierarchy i guess. Monks are often called brothers, Nuns, sisters, and priests fathers. It's a religious family type hierarchy, not a blood relative type thing. Not everyone called a sister is technically a nun though.
