Who taught you how to cook?

My Mom, and she was a good teacher!

No one,that why I still don't know how to cook : P

I taught myself to cook by watching others as a small boy. I look at recipe's and watch cooking programs as well. Today I'm going to bake oatmeal cookies, I usually sell them as well as they are in demand, especially with hospital staff.

Many have tried and all have failed. I do not like to cook. My grandmother forced me to help in the kitchen when I was younger and then told me one day that I had to learn to cook and sew in order to take care of the men. Even at five I thought that was BS and decided who I marry would cook and if he wanted to he could sew. My husband is the cook ( wonderful one at that ) and if we need sewing I have several friend that know how and would be glad to do it. I tried very hard to not go into the house until supper which meant I got to do the work I do best which was doing all the farm work with my grandfather.

I learned a few things from various family members over the years, But most of it was self taught.

My mother started teaching me to cook when I was very young. She was a wonderful cook!

Only make her homemade beef and Noodles and her Potato Salad. Philipine girl I met on my month schooling in Angeles City taught me about the wonderful world of Fried Rice.

Though my grandmother gave me very basic tips... I wouldn't listen beyond that since her food tends to be very dry.

I don't really know how to cook that well.. the most complicated thing I can make are scrambled eggs

But I watched my mom first. She was a terrific cook and had an old (50's) Betty Crocker cookbook that she had made copious notes and changes in. Basically, at eight or nine, I asked her to make something and she replied with "You want that, go ahead and make it", and so I did. I can't remember exactly what it was, but it was either a berry pie, chocolate eclairs, cinnamon rolls (yeast dough), tapioca pudding, or a pineapple upside down cake. By 11, I was cooking supper at least 4 times a week. At 15 I got a job in a restaurant and had an idea of becoming a chef. As it turns out, I'm more suited to following recipes than creating them. I then joined the Marine Corps as a cook, thinking I could get more training. As I wasn't that great of a Marine (issues with morons having authority) and the training I felt I needed not being available until reaching E-6, it became more work than the joy I found in cooking up to that point. I had several mornings as chief cook when we were at Subic Bay that the rest of my crew didn't make it in from Olongapo on time and I wound up cooking most of breakfast and lunch for 700 people by myself. It changed my attitude towards the trade immensely, and when I got out in '79, I couldn't find anyone willing to pay any money. The best offer I got was for six bucks an hour to take a shell of a building and make a diner for the guy from the ground up. I started in construction for the old man at 10 bucks instead.

My mom taught me but my dad helped too he was a great baker.

My grandfather was the first to begin teaching me. Since then, through observation, I have picked up cooking practices from at least a dozen different people, plus I have come up with ideas of my own.

Mostly, my grandmother. My mom did some teaching, but she never really liked to cook. My dad also taught me some of the things he liked to cook, but my grandmother cooking with me is one of my earliest memories. There are pictures of me rolling out pie dough with Grandma. She had her big rolling pin, and I had a small one. Grandma taught me more about cooking and baking than my Mom and Dad combined. She was the biggest influence on me, including the fact that I rarely measure, and that I use a recipe as a suggestion, rather than engraved in stone, particularly after I've made it at least once.
