I learned to cook in Youth Authority, I was put to work in the central kitchen where all food for the entire institution was prepared. You had to start in vegetables and work you way up to main dishes, bakery. Learned how to cook for 1200. Pretty hard to break those recipes down for regular meals. Now I only cook for 14.

Starting out with simple recipes, when I was young, my great grandmother told me how to fix a couple things. I took it from there. I used to stay with her when my grandparents had to go to town.

Actually I guess I should have checked Mom and then added also my Grandmother. Grandma was a stickler for following receipes to the letter and she loved making unusual stuff, like baked Alaska she made for my birthday once.. Mom cooked by instinct and trial and error but she was an excellent cook. She often ignored parts of recipes or made up her own. I guess I got the benefit of learning both methods.
