I prefer it to calling in certain situations, especially if I know the person can't get to the phone. It's a very efficient way to send detailed information that doesn't always require an immediate response. If I can't catch someone on the phone, I will actually send a text instead of leaving a voicemail. LIkewise, I have come to actually hate checking VM and prefer getting a text instead. I can check a text quickly without disturbing people or making a scene. I have to get up and leave the room to check a VM.
"I prefer it to calling in certain situations" So long as one of those certain situations isn't to break up with someone. Breaking-up via text message is pretty awful. Funny but awful.
I look at it as one of those neccessary evils of life. I would rather talk to someone but most seem more inclined to want to text. I can much easier talk to someone on the phone than text them and talking to them on the phone while driving is not illegal in my state but texting while driving is. If caught for this, I could lose my job also.
