The historical Buddha was a Indian prince by the name of Siddhartha Gautama, who lived around 500 BC. At a young age he renounced his life of luxury in favor of pursuing spiritual enlightenment. After years of fasting and 49 days under the Bodhi tree, he conceived the Four Noble Truths and Noble Eightfold Path, which remain as the basic tenants of Buddhism to this day.

But in general, a Buddha is someone who has achieved enlightenment through the Noble Eightfold Path.

He was an Indian prince named Siddartha Gautama. He was a prince in Northern India, and his father, wishing him to have a perfect life, never exposed him to death, poverty, or pain, and kept him in the palace walls. One night Siddartha sneaked out of the palace. One of the first things he saw was an impoverished old person who was sick and dying. He went back home and confronted his father. They fought, and Siddartha left to find a way that man could truly avoid suffering. First he found a group of ascetics, who were very strict, and fasted all the time, and treated themselves poorly. This was too strict of life, and seemed to invite suffering, although he still found them to be wise. He found another group of persons who were hedonists, and revelers, and they lacked in discipline, and suffered due to that. One day, he say down under a big bodhi tree and began meditating. He vowed to stay at the tree and meditate until he achieved true enlightenment. He had a torturous time, being tempted by maya, and other wicked and tempting spirits. Finally though, he was able to maintain his meditation, and empty himself of everything. He achieved enlightenment, and was given the 4 noble truths, and the 8 fold path, which he then spent the rest of his life teaching to others,...

Finally though, he was able to maintain his meditation, and empty himself of everything. He achieved enlightenment, and was given the 4 noble truths, and the 8 fold path, which he then spent the rest of his life teaching to others, so that all others might achieve enlightenment, thereby breaking the cycle of life and death, and achieving a pure state without suffering which is Nirvana. That's all I remember of THE Buddha. In one of the sects I was in, we studied another Buddha who has a different story, and who set up a system of being, which also broke the cycle of life, death and suffering. This was a state of being and a place called the pure land. It was Amitabbah Buddha. (Buddha of limitless life and light). This Buddha vowed not to accept full and complete enlightenment (nirvana), until all beings have been brought to perfect enlightenment. But those who chant the name of this Buddha 10 times, and who meditate on the enlightenment of all beings, can still avoid birth, death and suffering, but will not lose the final bond of existence and achieve Nirvana, until all other beings have done so. The chant was Namu Amida Butsu, and was called Nembutsu. The sect was Jodo Shinshu was started by a Japanese master named Shinran. It was while meditating, changing, studying, and practicing under this sect, and having taken vows with an abbott, that I found the enlightenment of Christianity, and began my conversion finally to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and the eternal life without suffering, and free of birth and death held out by our creator Father, through His son, and by the grace of His Holy Spirit.

    Blessings,

    Steven

I'm a Buddhist. A very short answer to your question is that he was an Indian prince who forsook the opulent life of the palace and meditated until he discovered the Four Noble Truths and the path to Enlightenment and Nirvana, which basically is freedom from suffering. Do your research on him if you would like to know more details about him and about Buddhism. One good website for those who want to begin to learn about the Buddha and his teachings is www.buddhanet.net.

I am a Buddhist. I am also an native English language speaker. That is why I can not answer "where he belonged to?" If you correct that, maybe I can help you.

I do know. Buddha was teacher. That is the most simple answer there is. But if you want to know more, research him. But a lot of my family are Buddists, so they've taught me about him.
