I always thought NO ONE got pennies out of the wishing well. But every now and again someone walks by the wishing well and steals a bunch of pennies out of it.

From "Modern Marvel's" show, "Coin Operated II"

It's estimated that, worldwide, people toss more than a million pounds of coins into wishing wells each year. Most of this gets donated to charity, which means the coins,, have to come out of the well. Not a terribly difficult task-- unless the wishing well is 164 feet below the earth's surface. Precisely, since 1954-- 36,072,131 coins, amounting to over 134 tons of money donated to charity.

...collecting all these coins is not an easy job; wading in is not an option. Instead, the entire well has to be drained once a year by Luray's maintenance staff...and we do this annually to collect all of the coins. It's a two-day process, and it all begins by lowering a sump pump down into the pool.

Once the sump pump starts working, it will take until the next morning--a gold mine of treasure awaits Luray's maintenance staff.
Workers, armed with burlap sacks, shovels, and wheelbarrows, survey the massive piles of coins. In some areas, the coins have accumulated in mounds more than two feet deep.

Right now, we're cleaning the coins down off the walls, putting them into the lowest point, and from there, we'll shovel them into buckets, put the buckets of coins into bags, about 200 bags on average, per year.
There's an estimated 30 to $40,000 in this batch, which will all go to several different charities designated by the town of Luray.

It takes about four hours to clear the pool--but the job is far from done. Now the crew has to get thousands of pounds of coins out of the cavern.
The wishing well is about a half a mile from the exit, and with barrels that weigh about 200 pounds apiece, teamwork is essential. It's a long winding journey out of the cavern, and the crew begins but at the end of the path, there's one final obstacle: it's a workout worthy of the local high school football team.

Every year, the boys volunteer their time to help haul sacks of coins up several flights of stairs.

It goes on to say that there is a company that cleans these coins.

We get pennies all the time in the casino where I work that look like some treeker scooped out of a fountain, all crusty and cankered, then they either take the cash and play one cent at a time so they can get free drinks, or they run out and buy a rock. I guess the crack dealers don't take crusty pennies.

Gnomes. They put on their invisible cloaks and quietly fish them out with discarded chewing gum that they get off the sidewalk attached to string. No one knows what they do with the coin. Theories say they finance trips to Vegas and gamble, chase women, wild drinking binges. And such. Not all Gnomes are like that tho. Many sit quietly amongst the flowers, diligently keeping snakes and spiders away.

Most times places donate the money to a charity.
If you know a place that has a fountain see if they can donate the money to your charity!

There are three fountains in the mall that I go to most often. Each month there is a sign that tells what charity gets the money that is thrown into the fountain that month. Some of them are: the local animal shelter, march of dimes, cancer society, MDS, etc. I never feel bad about giving my kids some pennies to throw in them.
