Too many different criteria to name one better than another different times, different circumstances. Some great ones I suspect might not even have been a decent footnote in history in a different era in reality, this political spin doctoring has been going on for a long time. Obviously the one with the toughest/worst task to perform during his terms would have to been Lincoln. What could possibly be worse than having still a relatively young country trying it's level best to rip itself apart through a massive civil war leaving a large share of it in ruins in the end?
Both Lincoln and JFK for going against the borrowing of money that holds tax payers accountable for the payback plus interest!!! This is why they were killed!!!
Abe Lincoln for standing by his convictions and saving the union.
Teddy Roosevelt for his love of nature and creation of the National Park System.
FDR for his leadership out of the depression and to victory in WWII.
Dwight Eisenhower for his leadership during the turbulent 50's and the Communist "threat".
Most loveable President was Bill Clinton. I just loved that guy! Still do!
Excluding President Obama, who cannot be judged since his time in office has not ended, I would say the "best" President we ever had was probably Abraham Lincoln. He kept this nation together when some wanted to tear it apart. Others I would put high on the list include Washington, Jackson, T.Roosevelt and F.D.Roosevelt.
Sounds llike we actually do agree on this one - four out of five. I didn't list Jefferson (even though he's my current avatar) because I think many of his most significant accomplishments came before he was President. Sometimes it's hard to separate the person from the Presidency. For instance I consider John Adams one of the preeminent champions of the American Revolution (along with Washington, Jefferson and Franklin) but I also know that his presidency was pretty much a failure.
I still ponder how much James Garfield might have accomplished had he lived.
LOL I would not want to attempt to assemble my own thorough ranking of all of our Presidents without having a stack of books handy to verify a lot of the details that I sometimes lose track of. Jefferson would certainly make my "second tier", and I'd probably include Madison, Polk, Cleveland and maybe Truman, but don't quote me on that. And you'd probably be surprised that I would rank Nixon a lot higher than "the average liberal" might. Watergate was a criminal enterprise and he deserved to leave office over it, but he also had an impressive foreign policy record and much of his difficulty in Viet Nam was inherited from LBJ.
Here's what groups of historians and journalists think:

I have a feeling though that we started getting into it when we got to 6+ thought ;-)
