'Milk' was very good, Sean Penn is nothing short of genius in that film. However 'BrokeBack Mountain' was something that mainstream society could relate to better, and it's a favorite of mine cause it accurately depicts the struggles gay and bisexual men have to go through, forcefully and stealthfully trying to fit into what is mostly a heterosexual society. It wasn't really totally homosexual anyhow, It was about a couple of bisexual men

It definitely struck a chord with people.

This was the first film that showed me that homosexuals can love and get hurt just like the rest of us. I couldn't picture it before seeing BM and I consider it to be a milestone in film making.

It's actually the only gay movie I've seen. I've seen a lot of Boys' Love anime, though! Junjou Romantica, Sekaiichi Hatsukoi, No. 6, Loveless, Sukisho, Koisuru Boukun, Gravitation... I've got quite a record. Haha :3

This was my favorite of the ones listed. It had little to do with sexuality of any kind.
The wording of the question is offensive though, which is why I answered. The Nazis made sure they pointed out the "homosexuals" along with the "Jews" just to make sure everyone understood they were not only different, but inferior and that I am sure was the reason for asking the question: make a statement about sexuality.

As a huge fan of David Bowie, I really enjoyed Velvet Goldmine. You could have added both Batman Forever and the Ghost and the Darkness to the list.

Batman Forever does not have openly gay characters; however, Joel Schumacher adroitly explores the camp elements inherent in the Batman mythology to tell a story about a conflict between two gay couples. There is the dark or negative gay couple represented by Two-Face and the Riddler. Then there is the positive gay couple represented by Batman and Robin. Ultimately, it is the positive gay couple who wins in the end.

This same pattern is used in the film The Ghost and the Darkness. The two male lions represent the negative male union. John Henry Patterson and Charles Remington embody the positive male union.

I don’t know if The Ghost and the Darkness was intended as a gay film, but I have no doubt that Batman Forever’s gay subtext was deliberate.

Then all superhero movies are gay, they never end up with the girl...AND the Green Lantern just came out of the closet, so there it is

I would not agree with that assessment. I don’t even think all films featuring Batman are gay. There is, however, a recognizable subtext present in the film, Batman Forever.

We watch as two relationships are formed. There is the relationship between our two male heroes, and there is the relationship between our two male villains. Conventional romantic interests are present for both the heroes and villains, but these women are shunted to one side to make way for the male bonding.

The whole character of the Riddler is that of a jilted lover. He pines and schemes for the attention of Bruce Wayne. It is this unrequited obsession with Bruce Wayne that drives Edward Enigma throughout the movie.

Ouch. That really hurt my brain. I hate people who think like that.

My male friends are not my brothers; My female friends are not prostitutes. Why should I give preferential treatment to my male friends over my female friends? None of it makes any sense.
  • patchulie Donald ... 2012/06/20 19:56:17
    patchulie
Why? Is your brain so evolved, that it is unable to qualify such a term... And we are talking about MOVIES... The hero never REALLY gets the girl... BECAUSE, they are HEROS, that are unable to actually be with the girl, because they are too busy, saving the universe, ok... That's why it always plays out, the hero has a same sex side kick, because other wise, life would be to complicated... Picture superman going to work every day with his briefcase and cape... Making enough money to have a house, 2.5 children, wife, dog, an audi minivan and a white picket fence...

I think you're reading waaaaayyyy too much into it. I understand that's the nature of art though, everyone takes away from it their own personal perspective. With regards to "The Ghost and the Darkness", that was a fictionalized account of the very real Tsavo man-eaters. Nothing whatsoever, blatant or implied, about being gay. Google "Tsavo Lions/Chicago Field Museum.

Regardless, even fictionalized, the movie fell short of being the thriller the studio had hoped.

It is possible I am seeing more than was intended. I'll readily concede that is possible.

Regarding The Ghost and the Darkness, it strayed very from the actual events upon which it was based. It was more a work of fiction than anything else.

Uh, yeah. That's why I said "...a fictionalized account". I am very aware of the actual events. Not trying to be arbitrary, but that was the point. The movie studio was just trying to make the story more exciting than it was. They failed, but I don't think they added a homosexual aspect to it.
