Which Do You Prefer: Drawing or Writing?

Thank you Kate! I believe art, music and writing go hand in hand. For years people told me to focus on one gift but I could not give any of them up. It's sort of like having several kids and being told you have to give one away. I couldn't do it so I'm still doing it all whenever I can. I hope you hang on to all of them too. Have you seen "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards? I used it when I was teaching and love it.

i feel you totally....but sometimes life is such that you have to put one aside for a while because obligations don't leave you time.i am in college right now studing music ;) i already play the piano and i'd like to learn more instruments...i enjoy drawing in my free time.i wrote lyrics once when i was heartbroken but i mostly write short stories..i haven't seen "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" but i will thanks for telling me :) there are videos on youtube which help also

Wonderful! I was torn between art and music and chose art. The book describes the process of accessing your right brain to draw and has exercises. It is great. It is also pretty awesome to have more than one muse. I'm recovering my eyesight after an accident so drawing is out. Hands and arms still hurting so guitar is out. For now anyway. Glad I still have flute and piano to keep me from going nuts. I recently moved and took all my instruments before my last night at old place. Thank God I remembered singing and that the voice is an instrument too. ;) It's all good.

Thank you for good advice. (The reward of patience is patience.) I believe there is a lesson in all this as well. I feel very grateful to be alive and doctor says eyesight thing is temporary. I'm healing quickly and inspired to do some recording again as well as new paintings and songs when I'm totally well. I had no idea how much I'd miss it if I couldn't do it for a little while. I used to like to draw, but never developed a talent for it. I love to write, though. My sister says I'm the only person she knows who still writes letters.

No; I wrote some stuff a few years back that got posted to homepageofthedead.com, and was pretty well received. I mostly write for myself, and let friends read it. They tell me I'm not bad. I can't draw to save my life...

Well... more sketching really. I'm not much of a formal artist, but I do enjoy drawing random doodles and the occasional comic strip, as well as guitar designs. I've also gotten half decent at drawing side-profiles of cars, and I eventually wanna learn how to use CAD programs so that I can make 3-D models of my car designs (I already know the basics of Google Sketch Up, but that program works much better with more simple geometric forms like houses). I've never been quite as much of a writer, though I have written a few short stories in the past (I took a high school class on creative writing). But as a musician, for instance, I am much better at coming upper with riffs and melodies than I am with writing lyrics (which is mostly a confidence thing).

How on earth can you have such a question and leave out doodling. ALL business runs on doodling. Telephones of all types run on doodling. (Bending paper clips or straightening them is doodling)
Without doodling there is nothing. AND YOU LEAVE IT OUT!!!!

Writing, my drawing skills are rusty.

I usesd to do both (typically short stories or poems and drawings that were based on the writing or emotions that I couldn't put into words.) however when my bf broke up with me and I realized how hard life really is, I lost my passion for either of them. Now I read, bc the right words/pictures tht were in my heart/head r no longer there.

Yeah sorry. I wasn't aiming to make anyone sad by reading that >.< nd I get what ya mean. My creativity sometimes pops up once in a while but it's only a spark that doesn't really ignite my passion again. Still tho, I'm not giving up on it. :)

That's good. Creativity is a valuable skill to have, and one should always try and hold onto it. And don't worry, you didn't make me sad. I was just saying that I sympathise with how you feel.

Well, at least not "boohoo" sad. I did feel a little depressed because I guess I sorta know how ya feel. But it's all good. I just drew some stick figures and cheered right up. It's like impossible to keep serious while drawing stick figures. :-P

Aw, I'm sorry. I used to draw as well. Now I write long stories that I want to publish as novels.

I know. People at my school don't like me and I don't care. And a so called friend did me wrong. I thought she was really my friend. SMH, I guess I was wrong.

lol Yes I do. I am thinking of leaving my high school though. I don't like the school or the people. I didn't even want to attend the school this year but my mother made me. I hate it so much! I might leave at the end of the quarter.
P.S. As for the friend, she and ''her friend'' intimidated me a few days ago and I am afraid to go to lunch. I owed her money and I will pay it soon. My mother had a hard time paying because she has financial issues and I blame myself in someway or another. The friend looks like she wants to beat me up too. That is why I am going on the library with my TRUE friend, Candace.
I don't feel comfortable at school at all. i feel more comfortable online talking to someone plus I have been done wrong by so much high school girls and it is not funny.
I am thinking of switching to virtual school. Do you think switching to virtual school is the right choice for me?

In some ways yes. U shouldn't be living in fear. At th same time I think u should try another real HS bc u do need human interaction. But honestly consult with a guidance teacher or something, I don't know exactly how vitriol schools work
