As the old adage goes, "nothing is certain but death and taxes." And we hate to bring up bad news, but the latter part of that certainty is almost upon us. April 15 is known for nothing more than "tax day." It's the day we're all supposed to get our paperwork together, submit our documents, and only hope for a substantial amount of cash back in return. And it's around the corner.

But hey, there has to be a bright side to doing your taxes, right? Are you looking forward to a big refund? Or maybe you just like knowing that you're performing your patriotic duties as a U.S. citizen. Whatever the case, we'd love to know more about your opinion on taxes. Take our six-question Tax Survey. You are lucky, according to my parents who traveled there you have a much better Health Care system than we do also. The figures that I saw from the World Health Organization say the the USA is 37th in quality and first in cost of Health Care, and that is terrible.

It never ceases to amaze me how lucky some people are just by a fluke of birth. If I was born in America, my youngest son would not have seen his 3rd birthday. If I was in many African countries, my wife wouldnt have made it through the birth of my first son.

No, each year I do manually fill out my 1040. Each year it gets more complicated--lately drastically more complicated. More forms, more schedules, etc. etc. It's a scam.

Both. I'd rather just have a fair amount be taken out of my consumption every time I make a purchase. Why does the government need to take a third of my paycheck, just to give most of it back to me at the end of a year? Ridiculous.

My accountant does the filing, but I must write the checks. I don't like it. Someone I know writes a $400,000 check to the government every year. He says it makes him sick, but it also means he is making money.

I am with you on everything EXCEPT your support for the Absurd Tax, which is badly misrepresented by calling it a fair tax. Even my University Economics Professor would gag at that ridiculous plan being called fair. He said very accurately that ANY tax which taxes at the Extreme tax rates that the Absurd Tax does is extremely UnFair to everyone and Highly Inappropriate from the point of view of Good Economics. I strongly agree with him I got an A+ in Economics.

The FairTax plan to abolish the IRS and repeal the income tax is the way to go. 80% of current tax filers would no longer need to keep track of anything, the taxes get paid, and everyone is treated equally in terms of taxation when they buy new goods or services.

That would make too much sense for our government to understand.
Libs wouldn't like it since Obama has hired a bunch of them at the IRS to spy on taxpayers and try to enforce his healthcare manifesto.
Need to wake the silent majority and vote most encumbents out of office and make the new ones change the rules to benefit the legal citizens and taxpayers instead of the welfare breeders and undocumented democrats.

The effective tax rate under the FairTax, for a family of 4 with consumption and income at twice the poverty level (around $58,000) is about 11%. The FairTax repeals the regressive payroll tax, death taxes, corporate income taxes (paid by investors, employees and customers), self-employment taxes, the alternative minimum tax, capital gains taxes and taxes on royalties and other miscellaneous income taxes. All those taxes are swept away (along with the IRS) and replace by a flat tax on sales (23% of price paid) combined with a standard exemption from that tax for each household (a rebate of consumption taxes up to the poverty level of spending sent out each month to all households to cover the tax). In 2011, that rebated amount for a family of 4 would have been $6767 per year.

So, the first $6767 of taxes is covered. At twice the poverty level $6767 in taxes, net of that rebate would be paid (no need to account for it by filing). such that the effective tax rate is $6767 / $58,000 = about 11.5% (I am only approximately the numbers).

Measure that against the truly absurd tax rates of the current income tax system--up to 39% in income taxes plus payroll taxes of 13.3% to 15.3% (whenever they decide to stop raiding social security) plus 35% in corporate income taxes--all of it h...

There is no just defense of the income tax. It is 100% a disgrace, Marxist, and anti-Liberty. The FairTax rate is what it is to fund Social Security, Medicare, and general government at the level of the taxes it replaces. Your suggesting that this is "absurd" must therefore concede that the current tax system is at an absurd rate. I do not disagree with that, but that fact seems to be lost upon you and far too many others--something that the transparency of the FairTax would quickly correct. Hey, maybe that's the point?
