I get most of my clothes from thrift stores because I hate following fashion trends.

I need the tailoring, as I am a small woman with a small waist & a large bust line. I also need custom clothing for onstage performances.

Not sure if one would classify Walmart or Target as a department store or not.

Mainly my cousin, if I don't get my clothes from her then it's usually the mall when they're on sale.

Why spend a bunch of money on a name brand when you can get it at a thrift store for dolllars? Only thing I buy at regular store is my jeans, and only on sale.

Actually I buy the vast majority of my clothes from online retailers. I hate trends, I prefer more classically feminine clothes and I find it much easier to find things I like online.

I feel the same way! As I said above I buy mostly online to find what I like but I would much prefer to buy at thrift stores. Unfortunately, in my experience, all the women's clothes I find in those stores are size 10 and up. The chances of finding something in a size 6 that I actually like is next to nothing.

Anyway, good for you for ignoring trends and making your own style. :)

I have a similar problem in that I'm 5' 3" and although average build for my height, it still makes it hard to find clothes that don't look like a tent on me. It's just a matter of really looking hard for the right clothes. I'm not affraid to spend extra money on a tailor though.

God, that must be frustrating. Alteration IS an option I suppose, but I've been unsure of what COULD be tailored (I imagine some women's clothes would be more difficult than most men's) and how much it would cost, so I've never considered it.

My style is somewhat bohemian grunge (I don't think that's a real thing, but not sure how else to describe it :-)) so I value comfort and uniquness over "how good the clothes look". I never ask for opinions on clothing. If I like it I buy it and I couldn't care less what anyone says.
Alterations aren't too expensive usually. You've already saved money by going to a thrift store.
