First of all if nothing has been requested, I call and ask if I can bring something. If they respond with something like "Nothing at all! We're all set!" I will bring a bag of ice in a cooler, a case of soda (mixed Coke/Pepsi, diet/non-diet) and my incredible potato salad with some reusable sturdy plastic forks/spoons and some reusable plastic bowls. I make sure to bring a container to recycle the soda cans and a bag to ut the used utensils/bowls into.

I keep the clean utensils and bowls in a bag in my car so they are there - just in case. I also have a large cooler in the back of my Subaru so I can load it with ice and soda on the way to the picnic. It makes it all very easy. So, all I really have to do is make the potato salad.

People always ask me to bring either potato salad, or an appetizer that I make all the time with lightly toasted bread, cut in circles with a biscuit cutter, topped with mayo mixed with bacos and topped with a cherry tomato slice. It is to die for!

Assuming I have already called the host and asked what they would like and received a not so very helpful reply I'd bring something I know for sure the host does like (food or drink) or if I have no clue what they like I usually bring a bottle of good wine or signature dish of mine (usually if they don't drink).
