What's the difference between a hooker and a whore?

I aways thought they meant the same thing: you know, a lady of the night. But my landlady from a while back told me that a hooker is a prostitute (the world's oldest profession), and a whore is simply a promiscuous woman. I've not gone so far as to evoke the dictionary because that would spoil the fun. Wonder what you guys think...

anyone can be a whore it simply means you can be bought by some kind of gain for yourself you don't have to be A WOMAN at all.as all prostitutes are not woman either. And if you look up the word slut in the dictionary, you'll find its lost its original meaning.

Interesting. "slut" does seem worse (more debased or vulgar) than "whore/" But "whore" seems somehow less professional than "hooker." Hmm..

The more people you ask, the more varied your answers. Nevertheless, someone who is paid for sexual services is called many things, among them are hooker, whore, call girl, lady of the evening...
A slut is simply someone who does it, but doesn't get paid.
