Only once in every 823 years, huh? March of 2013 would like a word with you (or your source).

It actually happens in any month with 31 days (thus January, March, May, July, August, October, and December) in which the first day is a Friday. That happens a lot more often than once every 823 years. A lot more.

Since weekends are actually just Saturday and Sunday, you can also get five full weekends in any month with 31 days in which the first day is a Friday or Saturday, or any month with only 30 days (April, June, September, November) in which the first day is a Saturday. That most recently happened in June of 2013.

If you want rare calendar stuff, how about a few years ago in which Mardi Gras (aka Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday) and Ash Wednesday were in two different months?

“The calendar people” would be Julius Cæsar for the basic structure of the calendar we use, and Pope Gregory for a slight modification to implement Leap Centuries to correct a discrepancy that, by the time England finally adopted the Gregorian Calendar, had resulted in an eleven-day error.

Considering that both of these dudes have been dead for centuries (millennia in the case of Julius Cæsar and his Julian Calendar), I’m pretty sure that this doesn’t come from them.

That said, what I said can be very easily verified. Just look at any 2013 calendar, turn to March, and count the Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Five each. Since you’re reading this on a computer or smartphone, you can use its own calendar. For Windows dekstop, look in the lower-right corner of your screen, and double-click on the time displayed there. For Mac, upper-right corner, and it’s a menu. For iOS or Android or Windows RT or Windows Mobile, there’d be a Calendar app.

Other five-weekend months (counting Fridays) just in this decade so far: January and October, 2010; and July, 2011. The next one after August, 2014 will be May, 2015. Counting the August, 2014 that this thread is about, and the March, 2013 I referred to before, that’s seven in the space of a little over ½ a decade. So, no, not all that rare.

I’d like to know what article you got the info about August 2014 from. I suspect that it was talking about something else besides or in addition to the five full weekends thing.

Further down-thread, sjalan said that August 2014 has two “waxing crescent moons.” If he meant “first quarter” moons (which are often shown as a waxing crescent symbol, though it’s actually a half moon, like this: “◐”), that would be kinda rare. Having the same major moon phase show up twice in any given month is indeed somewhat rare, whether it’s new, first quarter, full, or last quarter. Having them both happen on a weekend (which would require five weekends in the same month) would be rarer still. Perhaps that’s what the article was actually about?

Honestly, we should just switch to a 13 month calender with 28 days each month and a New Years Day at the end of December/start of January (and a second one every 4 years). For example, every Sunday would be either the 1st, 8th, 15th, or 22nd. It would be much easier to remember dates. Obviously, certain Holidays would have to be moved, but I think that's a small price to pay for a uniform calender. There would be a full moon every Saturday, the 14th. If you're a fan of astrology, it would make room for the missing 13th sign.
