Burning the Flag is something that is defended by the Supreme Court categorized under Freedom of Speech.
Book burning has a negative connotation from previous events in history. There's nothing more offensive than someone trying to keep a person or group of persons ignorant and in the dark about the horrors and joys of life and history. Book burning is an attempt to control.
Whats more offensive? Burning Books or Burning the Flag?

Burning the flag destroys a symbol of freedom. Burning books destroys freedom itself.
Burning a symbol, however sacred, is less offensive, less damaging than destroying what the symbol represents.

I've never burned a flag but mostly because wood is a better fuel. I don't derive my morals or ethics from the Supreme Court.
