Burning the Flag is something that is defended by the Supreme Court categorized under Freedom of Speech.

Book burning has a negative connotation from previous events in history. There's nothing more offensive than someone trying to keep a person or group of persons ignorant and in the dark about the horrors and joys of life and history. Book burning is an attempt to control.

To me, burning a book says that you hate someone so much that you will not even bother to learn about you.

Burning the flag upsets the entire nation. Burning books upsets the authors. (Though both actions are evil, gross censorship).

For me that's an easy question. I value knowledge more than an 'unreasonable love' for a country. Not saying all patriotic love is unreasonable, but most can't really explain why they love their country, or have never been in another country so really have nothing to compare it with.

By the slimmest of margins. Declaring hate for ones country is bad. Declaring hate for ideas is worse.

Books represent ideas. the peaceful exchange of which is one of the cornerstones OF this country. Both are equally unpatriotic.

There are more flags than just the U.S. What does the U.S. flag represent? The nation as it is or as it was or some ideal it has yet to achieve?

Do not be mistaken, both are egregious and inexcusable But if I had to choose between the two, the worse would be burning the flag. You burn the flag you are disrespecting a whole lot of things and people in this country. I feel you are sending an ominous message when you do it as well.

Now there are a bunch of folks who are going to shout back, "Hey, I love my country and it's my flag and things are not being done as they should, blah, blah, blah, and so I'm burning the flag in protest of the wrongs," or whatever. I say poppycock. Millions of ways to "protest" in America, and people listen to them all. Burning the flag is taking the symbol of everything that is America and destroying it in the name of a few grievances.

If Old Glory were not a sacred symbol to all Americans, then why have so many patriots in our past given up their lives to see that she is flying over given battle sites? The Iwo Jima statue, of course, is the incident most often referred to; however, there have been skirmishes in many, many remote war zones where men have died while rushing to "rescue" Old Glory.

I'm sorry, corny as it may sound, burn my flag and you burn my soul. And that I cannot tolerate. Find something else to symbolize your protests, but respect my flag or get the hell out of my country.

Not sure why I chose books but it was a gut reaction. Flags are symbols. Burning a flag may irritate and offend some but it does no literal harm (except to the flag, of course.) Burning books is an attack on the dissemination of information and freedom of speech, and is a tactic used by dictators and bigots for centuries.

Only because a greater offense is meant when burning the flag. Neither are really offensive to me. I don't really care if someone burns my country's flag. That's their problem. It has nothing to do with me.

Books though. Books aren't cheap these days, man. I'd be more upset about someone burning a book, especially if it was one of mine, or one from my school's library.
