I delivered 40 newspapers a day on my bicycle, 6 mornings a week for $0.99 (that's 99 cents). I was 11. A Coke cost 5 cents, candy bars were 5 cents. For 99 cents I could buy 99 Tootsie Rolls.
At 17, after graduating from high school, I went to work in a local shoe factory for $0.95/hour (minimum wage in 1964). Gas cost 26 cents/gallon. My first car, a 1951 Chevy, cost $45.

Starting pay: $5.25 per hour
Otherwise bailing hay at 8 and driving the tractor at 7
I didn't like his answer but now that I have a daughter and I hear the same things come out of her mouth I understand his logic... :)
