It was at a county fair years ago. I was on one of those rides which flings your 'car' up in the air while twirling you around along two axes 30 or so feet in the air and at about as many miles per hour.

Anyway, the terrifying part happened when the centrifugal force pulled the hinge bolt out of the safety bar holding my ex wife and I in the the seat. The only thing holding us in place was the force we exerted with our legs pushing ourselves back into the seat. Otherwise we'd have been flung out of the contraption at the stated speeds to end up in the trees adjacent to the fair. The ride was over in about two minutes, but it felt like an hour of sheer, pants wetting terror! When the attendant finally brought us down to let us out of our 'car' he turned white as a sheet. Needless to say we got the red carpet treatment the rest of the evening.

When I was about 30 years old, I drank to many jiggers Kamikazes and woke up the next morning in my own bed with a strange woman ( not attractive at all or remotely close) and there was blood all over the sheets, and myself, and we were both alive. What I stepped on when getting out of bed explained it all and then terror really set in!

My family is a Marine Corps family, and we got stationed overseas two and a half years ago. We left our beloved dog in the hands of very close friends while we were stationed there. My father got deployed as soon as we arrived, and one day we got a phone call from the family taking care of our dog. I hadn't known who it was at the time, but I saw my mother burst into tears. She had asked, "so he won't be able to walk again?", and that was it. I had believed she was talking about my father and I broke down. But my mother had looked up and smiled and reassured me that it wasn't my father- it was the dog. I had never been so relieved in my entire life.

I do not know. I am not easily terrified. I have been shot at 3 times, held at gun point once, been in 3 auto accidents, was a first responder to two more auto accidents, been dangling on a cliff I was climbing, while attempting to find a toe hold for support, and have faced a bankruptcy due to a disability that cost me my job and ultimately my marriage too. All of the above were temporarily frightening, but you just hang in there until things change. Terror doesn't last.

I took my younger brother skiing one time- he's a lot younger than I am- and is a beginner. I taught him the basics on the bunny hill and figured he might be up for a green run. He took off like a shot and landed upside down in a tree well, and I was terrified that me might have hit his head and been really hurt, even the ski patrol came over to assist. He was fine luckily.

I think it's safe to say that me and the general manager of the fair had a nice, LONG talk about risk management and liability insurance. As I said we got the red carpet treatment the rest of the night. :-)
