Selected facts wove with myth and fiction.
It's purpose is to make the general population identify with the state and the ruling elements. It is constantly re written as the population changes, to adjust to the bias's of the changing demographics and dominant groups
I.E.. Col. Custer and the 7th Cav. were heros to all Americans, until immigrants, who arrived in later decades began to dominate society.
They wished to diminish those who came before them, and elevate the goodness of their immediate ancestors.
So Custer and most Americans living then, became villains, and America did not become good until their ancestors arrived and got power. They also took away the name of the American people, the native Americans who created the USA. and gave their name to the Indians, and said "Everybody is immigrants no one has precedence before my people got here". So if yoiur ancestors built this country for hundreds of years, fought the Indians the Spanish the French and British, fought the American revolution, named their new country after themselves,...

So History, it's REALLY a waste of time, except to sort of stay in step with "correct think".
