LANCASTER - A grandfather has pleaded not guilty to child abuse, torture and other charges in the death of his grandson, who committed suicide after the grandfather allegedly beat him with a metal ball bat.
A Littlerock High School student, 15-year-old Gregory Smith took a sawed-off shotgun from underneath his grandfather's bed, went to a bathroom and shot himself in the head on Aug. 29, 2006, according to prosecutors.
The suicide occurred after Smith's grandfather, Willie Davis, beat him in the back of the leg with the metal bat, apparently because the teen's room was not neat enough, Deputy District Attorney Kelly Cromer said.
Davis, 58, is charged with abusing Smith and his 14-year-old granddaughter, while two more minors who lived in the house, one of them Davis' son, have claimed child abuse dating back to 2003.
Cromer said the cases will be consolidated into one since the alleged victims lived in the same house at the same time.
In the case of Smith and the 14-year-old granddaughter, Davis is being charged with torture, which carries a life sentence if he is convicted. He also faces charges of child abuse with great bodily injury and use of a deadly weapon, possession of an illegal weapon, criminal storage of firearm and mayhem.
In the second case, involving his 17-year-old son and 12-year-old grandson, Davis is being charged with six counts of felony child abuse, three counts for each victim.
During a two-part preliminary hearing in 2007, two victims testified that Davis would physically punish them. If the children talked back to Davis, he would take pliers and squeeze their lips until they bled, the victims testified. He punched and kicked them and then would keep them home until the bruises went away, they said.
Cromer did not know why the grandchildren were living with Davis. There has been no word regarding their parents.
Davis lived in Lake Los Angeles with his wife, who died from natural causes a week after Smith's death.
Davis, who is being held in lieu of $290,000 bail, will face a pre-trial hearing on Jan. 29.

That's what my great grandma use to do to us when we would get cut. That shit would leave you onconsious for an hour. : /
He should have the s**t kicked out of him, then he should be shot.
That's why the DEATH PENALTY is such a big issue;
If we have it, it will be probably get abused. Or ignored.
Because we don't, people like this can get away with this madness.
