I more often see the spelling "transexual" but "transsexual" looks more logic to me, because the whole thing is about "trans" and "sexual" so that gives double s.

It's Transsexual, two S's. I am a transsexual, I think I should know how to spell it. It has two because the prefix is trans-, already with an S, and that is added to a word that starts with an s. Therefore, two S's.

I think the actual term is 'Transsexual', 'Transexual' is a more informal and simplified way of spelling it, we all know how much Americans like simplified spellings... :P

I say both are correct, but what you think is up to you. If you want less confusion may I suggest Transgender.

that's another question I have: is transgender the same as trans(s)exual? or can transgender also be someone with the opposite gender identity but remains in his/her own body?

thank you! the thing is, on the one hand it is only about terminology, but on the other hand I feel it is important to know how I may present myself. I am not someone who feels the need to dress me up like a woman, and I do not behave deliberately feminine or so, but I feel not like I am a real man, and I feel well among the girls as I were one of them. When I was 11, I felt it as an insult if someone called me a 'girl' but now I feel well with it if someone does so. So how would I describe myself in one word?

Transgender is an umbrella term for all gender variant people and no we are not all the same. Under Transgender you will find "gender fluid" people who may only mix it up a little bit with some spicy cross gender clothing. Than you have "cross dressers" who can be gay straight or bisexual. Than you have the "shemales" the ones who chose to keep their male function, but everything else is female via hormones and or surgery. And many many more... "Transsexual" refers to people who almost always from a very early age hated their birth gender and transition not only in clothing, but take hormones to affect changes to the body and surgery to change what's between their legs.

Thomas the correct word is transsexual, I'm a transsexual and it does matter. Who you are and your life is not that simple either for me or anyone to peg. So please don't simplify us into your tiny little narrow as the truth is wide box.

The correct spelling is transsexual. I should know because I am one! My American Heritage dictionary has it with 2 esses. And it makes sense that it would have two esses. The etymology of the word is from "trans", meaning across or to cross, and "sexual".

thanx, I think 2 esses make sense, like you explain. but I see it spelled so many times with 1 only, its confusing

Merriam-Webster on-line has two entries: transsexual and transexual. The definition of the term is given under the entry "transsexual". Under "transexual", Merriam-Webster on-line states only "variant of transsexual". So I think two esses is the preferred spelling.

Maybe but transexual says the same thing with fewer letters so I prefer it because of that and most trans Ive met spell it that way and I figure they should get to choose lol

That's fine, I suppose. Most books on the subject, including scholarly and medical texts, use the term "transsexual". I am a transsexual myself, and know a lot of transsexuals, and most of us spell it with two esses. But . . . to each her own!

yeah my impression is that if you want to search for more serious information, like scholarly and medical texts, you have to google for transsexual with the double s
