The movie is loosely based on a rather inaccurate non-fiction book (of the same name) by a writer named Herbert Asbury. Asbury's book is riddled with speculation, exaggeration and outright falsehoods, but it is very, very entertaining. It does not have the central movie plot line of the son of a slain gangster seeking to avenge his father's death, but it does have the character of Bill the Butcher, pretty much as portrayed in the movie.

The culminating draft riots in the movie are an accurate historical depiction of real events in New York City.

The events leading up to the draft riots of the 1860s. It also exposes how America has always had bigoted attitudes toward large ethnic groups of immigrants. Replace "Irish" with "Mexican" and the story gets familiar. There is a scene where immigrants, still literally standing on the ramps of the boat are inducted into the US army.

That reminds me of the "Irish Brigade" During the Mexican American War, a brigade of Irish American Soldiers were sent to fight the Mexicans, But they discovered they had more in common with the Mexicans, so they switched sides.

The extremely corrupt "boss" era of New York. The DVD set actual includes a documentary that explains the history behind the movie in detail.

1863. America was born in the streets. In this movie, we see Amsterdam Vallon returning to the Five Points of America to seek vengeance against the psychotic gangland kingpin Bill the Butcher who murdered his father years ago. With an eager pickpocket by his side and a whole new army, Vallon fights his way to seek vengeance on the Butcher and restore peace in the area. However this is more said than done. Written by Omar

Having seen his father killed in a major gang fight in New York, young Amsterdam Vallon is spirited away for his own safety. Some years later, he returns to the scene of his father's death, the notorious Five Points district in New York. It's 1863 and lower Manhattan is run by gangs, the most powerful of which is the Natives, headed by Bill "The Butcher" Cutting. He believes that America should belong to native-born Americans and opposes the waves of immigrants, mostly Irish, entering the city. It's also the time of the Civil War and forced conscription leads to the worst riots in US history. Amid the violence and corruption, young Vallon tries to establish himself in the area and also seek revenge over his father's death. Written by garykmcd

When his father is killed in New York City, Amsterdam Vallon returns in 1863 to hunt down his father's killer, the ruthless, Bill 'The Butcher' Cutting. It's not easy for Amsterdam as gangs roam a corrupt New York City, with Bill Cutting ruling over everyone. Written by FilmFanUk

Wow, you got to watch an R rated movie with lots of boobies in an American history class? That's enough to get the mommies in an uproar...
