This weekend HRH Elizabeth II celebrates 60 years of being Queen of:

Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Bermuda, Barbados, Barbuda, Belize, Grenada, Jamaica, Papua New Guinea, St Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, The Solomon islands and Tuvalu.

She is also the Head of State of 54 other nations of the Commonwealth, and yet she has no democratic power at all. She can neither suggest policy, vote or publically comment on the policies of her government.

Is it time to empower her? or divest her?

Oh I see, no different from any of us? In that case if you consider them 'ordinary' and not 'special', then you will not object if we get rid of them.

It doesn't really matter, power lies in our government and PM. As long as the royal family actually does things (e.g. Charity work, military) then I have no problem. I respect the Princes like I do anybody in the military and I repsect the Queen like I do anybody of her age. Respect always needs to be earned!

God bless the Queen and the people!

Nonsense! the royals and the monarchy are at the very heart of the British political establishment, and need to be booted out sooner rather than later. They are certainly NOT symbolic as many misinformed seem to believe.

Whether they are symbolic or not is more of an opinion rather than a fact. Why should they be booted? They bring in a great deal of tourism to the UK and power DOES lie with our PM, corruption and bribery aside.

Not really a real monarch but its fine to up hold a tradition in which your country is well known for, a lot of tourism bucks float in as well. This "constitutional monarchy" is merely ceremonial. while I'm not saying she should be empowered she should be able to say what she wants about the government and its policies

In theory she is able to dissolve parliament or refuse to sign something into law, but it has long been an unwritten understanding that were this to happen moves would be made to turn the UK into a republic.

I wonder if this would happen today given that the UK population are down on all politicians irrespective of party...?
  • Lena He... The Mosher 2012/12/09 21:01:37

Not true - and God Damn the Queen and the rest of the royal autocrats. Not merely ceremonial either - the royal prerogative is a fine example, the oath of allegiance - no choice, the deplorable national anthem, the inability of little Johnny or Judy from aspiring to the position of Head of State. and so on, and so on. Exclusion from the Freedom of Information act, an ct that Pickles MUST comply with, and also The Mosher if he lived in Britain, however your nation gave them the order of the boot many moons ago! the ability to halt a trial that could damage a family member. No thanks.

I can't understand the obsession the media and some people have for this so-called royal family. They are a worthless family of inbred deadbeats and should have been put to death 100 years ago, when they lost their dictatorship. Don't tell me They weren't a dictatorship, because that is what a king and queen are. Don't tell me they do a lot of good either. If my government picked me for a mascot and gave me billions of tax free dollars, I could also do a lot of good. Don't tell me they pay taxes either because that is just a recent happening.

I think she is worth every penny of it. She probably increases GDP by 5 percent. I read an article that she goes around her palice and turns out the lights to help save electricity.

If it is true maybe she is doing it to take a walk and get some exercise plus save some money.

If only it was fifteen million - you are way off the mark JMCC. Duties that anyone could do by the way, as per successful respected Republics. Prince Charles however did say that he was born to reign as he was not a commoner, what an appalling comment!!!! Yet a 'commoner' is now a relation by marriage. Even so, millions of us want the monarchy abolished SAP.

No she does not attract tourists! When did you last see any of the royals in person. The Palace of Versailles in Paris with its incumbents long dead, attracts more tourist than the combined viewings for the royal palaces in this royal lumbered society. .

Did you see what the wedding attracted? How about the Tower of London and her Jewels? How about some of her ceremonies? She is a gold mine for the tourist industry.

I remember Queen Juliana of the Netherlands. When she retired and became princes again, she mingled with the people of Holland. You couldn't get close to her because she would be surrounded by Dutch women.

The Queen of England isn’t free to mingle, it is too dangerous.
  • Lena He... Kiosk Kid 2012/08/04 18:09:36
    Lena Helena
She is NOT a gold mine. Do you really believe that once she is in her box that The Tower,The Crown Jewels, Windsor Castle and other buildings would cease to be visited. Monarchy is an anachronism and the royals feed off it every second of the day.. The Dutch monarchy for example costs their tax-payers far, far less than this dreadful dynasty in Britain. In fact the wedding did not create revenue, but the opposite. These privileged scroungers are rolling in cash and yet WE had to pay for the garish display of greed at a time when the 'ordinary' person is experiencing austerity and cuts. Those who have no choice but to receive State hand-outs, such as the disabled, unemployed and so on, have seen cuts in their 'income' Whereas the wealthiest in Britain these damn royals have managed to negotiate a massive pay increase. The weekly meetings at Buckingham Palace between our unelected Queen and HER government has clearly paid off! If she cannot mingle because as you imply it is too dangerous, then clearly it is not all lovey dovey between her and the rest of us who, as you admit by inference are ever more disgruntled with royals and the monarchy.

There is only one problem with Britain and the same problem with the US.

Marxist Liberals buy votes with welfare programs. They need to borrow money from investors to do it and eventually investors refuse to lend them more money. Vote for me and I transfer wealth to you.

The Queen is an asset. Marxist Liberals are parasites.

The Queen can't mingle because of violent Marxist Liberals.

Actually it is not. The full report has been analysed by eminent economists from all ends of the political spectrum and agreed.

I am nonpartisan, and when presented with facts that do not correspond to my world view I review them and change them accordingly - if they appear to stack up.

It is a fallacy to assume that people are happy to be on welfare; at one point in my career I worked on the security in transporting criminals between prisons, police stations and the courts.

I once asked the most prolific juvenile offender in Gloucestershire what it would take to stop him from committing crime. He answered "A house a car and a job".

People on welfare cannot create opportunity from nothing...

What economists (produce a quote from your reference and the reference).

I didn't see any facts in your report. As usuall there were only accusations. Of course, you didn't quote any facts. You only provided the reference.

BTW, economist wouldn't have a clue because the report is not about the economy. Accountants would audit the report and look for hard facts but there weren't any.

Identify the name of the fallacy, you can't.

I am referring to the original report compiled from figures published by the international banking organisations involved - they stack up.

If you are actually interested why not research where you can obtain a copy?
  • Kiosk Kid JMCC 2012/08/04 21:22:18

I am not interested becauseI already know it is crap. I am an accountant. There are no facts or you would have provided them. All they did was spew accusations, Standard Liberal Operating Procedure (SLOP).

Liberals are always long on accusations and short on facts.

I didn’t make any assumption or fallacies. You said; it is a fallacy to assume that people are happy to be on welfare;” Quote me where I said people are happy to be on welfare, you can’t! You used the the Straw man fallacy because you misrepresented what I said; “ Social justice means the same thing, lining pockets with welfare, take a bath and get a job.”

Some people are quite happy to be on welfare but not all people.
  • JMCC Kiosk Kid 2012/08/04 21:28:14

I did not say that you did. It was a statement of fact,

It is too easy to say "prove it" and then be unprepared to even examine something:

Isn't this evidence of entrenched positioning and a closed mind?

As an accountant I presume that you have had a university education and therefore understand that it is pointless to debate something if both parties have not had access to the same information.
  • Kiosk Kid JMCC 2012/08/04 21:47:33

You made the accusation but didn't produce any facts to back up your accusation.

You need facts not crap. I am not going on a snipe hunt looking for facts that don't exist. It is a ridiculous accusation. If any reasonable possibility existed, governments would join together and investigate.

Maybe all of the billionaires in the world together have a net worth of one trillion dollars. It is peanuts compared to the US public debt.

In your last comment again you spewed accusations. You didn't produce one fact. When you ask a Liberal to produce facts they can't because Marxism doesn't work! Therefore, they can only spew accusations, fallacies, and personal attacks.
  • JMCC Kiosk Kid 2012/08/04 21:52:08

There is no evidense that you can provide any facts to back up your accusations.

You sai; "I am referring to the original report compiled from figures published by the international banking organisations involved - they stack up."

Produce facts, produce a reference to the report. Let's see what king of proof they have.

I read one of them. It worked when I clicked on it but didn't work when I copied and pasted the shortcut.

However, again there are no facts. They admit they have no facts and they say they challenged the UN and the IMF to developed a better model

There goal is to get their hands on the money and give it to the poor to fight world poverty.

I beleive there is money in offshore accounts. However, there is no way it is close to 21 trillion. That much money would draw attention. You can hide that much money in the world. They say it is not just money but also Yatcht and other things.

In my opinion these guys are way out there.
