What do you think of Spagetti Junction? It is 40 years old this year.

It is a famous landmark junction to the north of Birmingham city centre. Personally, it never ceases to impress me. Perhaps because I am a courier and love industrial architecture. The fact that someone had to design it and it had to be built. Tremendous.
Best one is on the top flight, looking all the way down past 4 or 5 layers of dual carriageway and right at the bottom is a little canal piddling away.

You follow the signs to where you need to go, whats so impressive about that?

Someone dreamt it up and designed it and people built it. Thats what has impressed me. Following signs is harder than you think. I have seen many many doughnuts get into the wrong lane and have to cut across several.

Maybe I'm just hard to impress. If you want to see an impressive road system, dive in Germany, autobahns and roundabouts everywhere and hardly ever a wreck.

    German roads are fantastic.
I always stay off French motorways (their toll roads) as I pay enough already in ffuel duty, road tax and insurance, plus tax on the insurance, cheeky sods.
One place in Europe I have always wanted to drive, not had the chance yet is Lithuania. Aprantly one of the most dangerous places to drive.

French people in general seem to be poor drivers. I live near the french boarder, it seems they don't understand the concept of the passing lane being for passing not cruising. I've never driven in Lithuania, but I can't imagine it being any worse than Turkey.

It was a big deal once because it was so "new" and amazing, but I see even more spaghettis over here in Houston. Certainly the enormous elevations they can build now are impressive and a bit scary to drive on. They're ugly but beautiful in terms of structural engineering and architectural functionality. So, while SJ was impressive as it was an early leap forward, sadly it's being outdone elsewhere. It was an example though of forward thinking at the time and England should celebrate it at key anniversaries as cutting-edge 40 years ago.
