What do you do when someone who obviously knows who you are talks to you but you don't have a clue who they are?

I apologise for my terrible memory with names, and say that I do remember them from somewhere, that I remember their face, but am just terrible with names. But that is quite rare. Usually I never forget a face, I have recognised people I knew when I was little and haven't seen for years and still recognise their face even though it has changed over time, and after a while usually their name comes to me as well. But I'm better at remembering faces than names

Good memory for faces, bad one for names.
I have had conversations with people that lasted 20-30 minutes, i knew that I knew them but couldn't have told you their name if my life depended on it.

I usually pretend to remember them until I can actually place where they know me from and who they are,...With varying degrees of success. This happens to me ALL THE TIME it seems like. (I must have a generic face.)

Make general small talk and hope they give me some kind of a hint as to who they are. There is one woman I run into occasionally that I have absolutely no idea who she is, but she apparently knows me. The only thing I can think of is that she's the wife of someone I work with and she's seen me at the company Christmas party or some such.
