However some people have intractable hiccups. In a documentary, a man needed brain surgery to remove a cyst that was triggering his hiccups and had been for years without without any relief.
If you are CERTAIN the person has not swallowed something that is lodged in the throat then the next thing is to "calm" the reaction that triggered the response. I have found that the easiest way to do that is with a very warm drink of some sort. The one I like the best is hot camomile tea with honey and a dash of lemon juice. It has the effect of calming the lining of the esophagus.
If the hiccups continue more than two hours, go the the doctor. If the doctor can't do anything go to the emergency room of your local hospital.
