The fact the chickens lay external eggs is actually irrelevant, and a bit of a red herring. The real question is "where did the chicken genome come from", and the correct answer is, "From a hybrid of Red and Gray Ceylon junglefowl populations".
I think the question is a good one to illustrate one of the pitfalls of binary reasoning.
