What came first, the chicken or the egg?

The question "Which came first, the chicken or the egg" is a false dichotomy, or more specifically, it's the wrong question. Every individual chicken came from an individual egg and vice versa so the question is MEANINGLESS, until you consider "chickens" as a group. The GROUP "chickens" came from "earlier chickens" which came from a group of "even earlier chickens" which, if you go back far enough, came from a group of "not quite chickens".

The fact the chickens lay external eggs is actually irrelevant, and a bit of a red herring. The real question is "where did the chicken genome come from", and the correct answer is, "From a hybrid of Red and Gray Ceylon junglefowl populations".

The egg and both the chicken and the egg -- it evolved over time until it was what we'd call a chicken. The real question is at what point in the evolution of the chicken do we draw the line and call it a chicken. At that, heh, precise line, it'd be the egg that was the true chicken.

I think the question is a good one to illustrate one of the pitfalls of binary reasoning.
