"MEDICINE HAT, Alta. (CP) - As Canada's youngest convicted multiple killer stood weeping in the prisoner's box, the 12 jurors who found her guilty Monday of murdering her family filed silently past, staring at the ground to avoid her gaze.

The jurors walked out of court in a single line, close enough to touch the 13-year-old girl, after taking little more than three hours to decide her guilt on three counts of first-degree murder in the grisly killings of her mom, dad and eight-year-old brother.

They find the bodies of a middle-aged couple and their eight-year-old son and ask for the public's help in finding the missing 12-year-old daughter.

April 24, 2006: RCMP in Leader, Sask., about two hours away from Medicine Hat, arrest the girl and her boyfriend, 23-year-old Jeremy Steinke. Both are charged with three counts of first-degree murder.

April 25, 2006: Steinke and the girl are returned to Medicine Hat, where they are remanded into custody after appearing in court.

May 1, 2006: The girl is ordered transferred to a Calgary detention facility so she can attend school.

May 4, 2006: Police charge Kacy Lancaster, 19, with being an accessory to murder after the fact. They allege she destroyed evidence, gave a false alibi and drove the two suspects out of the province.

June 28, 2006: Court rules the 12-year-old girl does not have to undergo a psychiatric assessment.

Mar. 7, 2007: A 16-year-old girl is charged with being an accessory to murder in the deaths.

Mar. 27, 2007: Steinke's preliminary hearing begins, but ends in less than a day after lawyers agree the rest of the facts can wait until trial. A date for his trial has not yet been set and he has not entered a plea.

June 4, 2007: The girl's trial begins.

June 29, 2007: The jury is shown jailhouse letters between the girl and Steinke in which he proposes marriage and she accepts.

July 3-4, 2007: The girl takes the stand in her own defence, arguing that she considered discussions with Steinke about killing her parents to be "hypothetical." She says she stabbed her brother once, because she was scared of Steinke after he killed her parents, but couldn't strike the fatal blow.

July 9, 2007: After deliberating for a little more than three hours, a seven-man, five-woman jury finds the girl guilty of first-degree murder on all three counts.

And yes - I know there are those who will once again argue manipulation and corruption and even brain washing of a minor. Murder is still murder. At 13 she's still old enough to understand that death is permanent. That murder is both a crime and a sin (against not only God but against all mankind). Regardless of the 23 year old's influence, if she's guilty she's guilty. Ya - this is one of those times where I resort to the old "black and white" or "cut and dried" stance lol. You all know where to send the nasty letters rebuking me for being such a cold, heartless S.O.B. lol.

She knew what she was doing - at that age, you understand the difference between right and wrong and you understand death is permenant. The boyfriend was obviously a mental case - apparantly believing he was a 300 year old werewolf - and I am sure he encouraged her, but she could have walked away from psycho boy at any point. She didn't and she chose to murder her family instead. Deserved sentence IMO

wherever u got your source from seems a bit sketchy. at one point they said she was 12 and at another they said she was 13. plus what about the guy??? and what jury would convict a 12 or 13 or whatever she is year old girl over a 23 year old legal man? her lawyer must've been horrible.

She thought she was smart enough to have a 23-year-old boyfriend, Jeremy Steinke. She is smart enough to do the time.

She had a boyfriend who's 23, he should get a longer sentence that should, plus that's like paedophilia. However she was old enough to know what death is and her poor brother was only little. I would have reduced the charge to manslaghter I think but then again, I don't know what this kid's like. Here in the UK we've had even younger murderers, in 1993 two 10 year olds kidnapped and brutally beat a toddler before leaving him to die on a railway. They served eight years so I guess this seems fair considering that. Either way there are no winners here.

A 23 year old would have a very great influence on a 12 year old child.

    holy crap. thats messed up.
first off, what is a 13 year-old doing dating a 23 year-old? (or rather the other way around)
second, she must be insane to do that.
I definitely need more information to come to a good decision about that though.

12 - 13 years are enough for a person to know what they're doing. And...

I agree that she should be charged with murder even if she is 13. If I killed my family at 13 I would still have understood that what I was doing was murder.

What was the motive behind it? Not that it really matters as murder is murder, I'm just interested.

There shouldn't be any leniency just because she is 13. At that age she is a minor but NOT a child and should understand and take the consequences for her actions.

the girl should have had a psychological test done on her, most 12-13 year old kids I know-do know the difference between right and wrong-but they also think "I won't get caught", or they have someone older convince their young minds to do something they do not feel comfortable doing, but they feel pressured into it and they go along with the action.I am sure there are some of us here at Sodaland ,that know of kids who have gotten in trouble and when the parents ask the kids"you do know the difference between right and wrong don't you?" and when the kids say yes, then when asked a moment later"then why did you do it?"these same kids will answer"I don't know" While I do believe this young girl should be punished to a certain degree,I do believe she did not have proper representation,I do hope she has put in an appeal to this sentence-there has been a grave injustice done to this young girl-good poll Marianne-thanks for bringing this to my attention.

I do not deny that young girls are easily manipulated. I, too was one of them. I really disliked my parents as well. BUT, I can honestly say that I don't think anyone could have talked me into killing them. When you're 13, you may be naive, but you're not stupid. You have free will. You're old enough to know right from wrong.

She talked about it, planned it, and participated in it. I don't see what the issue is. She may have only been 12, but my 9-year old knows killing is wrong. I hope she was crying for the parents who tried to protect her and the brother who loved her.

With how much she changed her mind on what to do, she definitely needed
a better lawyer who would have made sure she was evaluated by a
psychiatrist. She is not mentally stable and for a man that age to date
a girl so young, he isn't either.

"Hypothetical" discussions about killing her parents? Who would even think of such a thing? She knew exactly what she was doing when she was talking about it. The 23-year old was just a way to push the "hypothetical" into the realistic. If someone's not serious about killing someone, why even discuss it? Ugh, I hope she and the rest of the people that were in on it, get what they deserve.

From what I understand, is the girl was mad at her parents for restricting her from seeing this young man for he was to old. Here is the case, where I read this investagation from. http://www.crimelibrary.com/n...
the chit is not going to be in there very long anyways. The thing that gets me is she claims "she was scared of Steinke after he killed her parents, but couldn't strike the fatal blow." Then how come she is going to marry him? Also when I was 12 / 13 I knew right from wrong. So she is accountable for her actions. But to bring up God to her at this point would be .. she would ignore it she is a satin worshipper. According to Canadian law, Jasmine, now 13, can only be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in prison, and no more than six can be served while in custody. I feel so sad for her brother. I just don't get why him? Sooo sad

She is a sociopath, having no conscience. It's difficult to cure a sociopath, they have better luck curring a phychopath because they eventually feel remorse and feel bad. Socio paths will never feel sadness, although they can fake it because they are good at manipulating people.

it's a tough call, I really wouldn't peg her with 1st degree on all of the murders, as it sounds like it wasn't really premeditated on her part, but she should definitely go to treatment for she seems to lack an understanding of the magnitude of her actions, and was also dating someone far too old for her, who must have had quite a bit of control over her.

Psychopaths can evntually learn to feel pain and remorse therefore having a conscience, Sociopaths will never feel remorse for what they have done.
