I was an only child too, but from an early age my parents made me pull my weight around the house, and if I begged or whined it was more likely that I wasn't going to get something lol.

I think some of my cousins thought so, because my brothers and I had more toys than they did (but they got them eventually... and didn't take care of them) but we were expected to take care of our things and behave. If we intentionally broke something or were careless with it, not only were we punished, but the thing was not replaced. Ever.

My parents couldn't afford to spoil 4 kids when I was really little. But when my parents got into a better financial state, we still weren't spoiled!

Now my nephew (only child) definitely spoiled (I contest to helping with that... but he's no brat.

My parents weren't really demonstrative. Material possession proved affection for them. I had a lot of stuff.
