We're often told, "There is no such thing as a dumb question." Is that true?

Yes, if it's a legitimate question. I hate feeling like, after living sheltered from certain things, everyone looks down on me when I ask a question.

There are stupid questions, there are snarky stupid questions....I teach in a middle school and if the question is on topic I'll entertain them...however if someone asks "did you know you were bald? or something totally off topic I sincerely tell them that was a stupid question....then their day has become worse...any volunteers for the white board math problems, they will be the first up in front working problems...any questions over the reading assignment they will be the first picked, any chores during the class period...guess what? It's them!!

Kids figure out that snarky questions will make their day difficult...by the second week of school the incidences of snarky retorts is under control.....heh,heh.....

Yes many questions that are answered just by using a small amount of observation are what I call stupid. I was a door host of a themed restaurant, people would come to me read the sign explaining what the establishment is and then look at me and say "so, what is this place?" I would say it is a restaurant. Suppressing my sarcastic nature so I wouldn't make fun of the customers.

As a life long devotee to Mad Magazine, without stupid questions there never would have been snappy answers!!

no questions are inherently dumb, it's whether they deserve an answer.

We've all had those moments when we ask a question, then a moment later realise "what a stupid question". And then there are REAL dumb questions...

Some questions are dumb, but dumb actions are worse. It's better to ask the question than do a dumb action.
