WARNING THIS IS A RANT

Silent Bob 2012/06/28 06:01:58
Okay, so recently on sodahead i've seen WAY too much shit about liberals, democrats, fucking whatever! Then I see these things about atheists and christians! WAIT. STFU FOR A MINUTE AND JUST READ THIS.
Before you go making a comment, just wait.
I know we all have our differences and that's what makes us who we are. I also know that this is an opinion site, but your "opinions" are starting to sound like shit to me.
Also, we need to learn to ACCEPT each other instead of constantly tear each other apart.
Stop posting shit like "i'm so heavenly and i'm gonna change the world", but the going and arguing about the dumbest things.
honestly, you guys can turn a simple question like What do you like more, beef or chicken? and turn it into some political dispute.
RIDICULOUS. Okay, now comment away...
You!

I can accept any body's opinion, I just can't agree with every body's opinion. Freedom of speech is greater when respected.

I agree totally. People don't have to agree but need to RESPECT the opinions of others and quit looking for a fight over something that they probably can do nothing about anyway.

I've no problem with people tearing ideas apart, but I agree with you that there is far too many people who lack the ability to criticize an idea and attack the person presenting it instead.

I should add that while here it seems more often than not to be the right who behaves this way, I find the exact same dynamic on left leaning sites coming from the so called liberals. Anyone who questions something or disagrees is immediate labeled a 'rethuglican', 'bagger' and branded a troll.

It's true, everyone needs to stop being so serious. Scroll up and look at the big Sodahead logo before you comment. Under it, it says "Opinions...everybody's got one." Keyword: Opinions

Yeah I made a comment similar yesterday. I visit Political polls too mind you, but would like to take a break as well. Being an Internet opinion poll where everyone can hide behind the Anonymity mask, you're going to continue to see this far past the new year.

Addiction. Picking our battles. There's too much of the former and not enough of the latter. People get addicted to telling others off, quite literally, I think. It lights up the same part of the brain that has to do with rewards. Is there any way to 12 step a nation, basically?

If there are people addicted to it, someone's selling a stronger version of it and they try to inject it everywhere...even if it doesn't make any real sense to do so. Thus, the nation's debating style, and everything becomes a "debate," heh, has gone past being somewhat productively polemic into 'The Forces of Good™ vs. The Forces of Evil™' dualism territory...something that used to be more the territory of orthodox religions. Then it's more likely that the "more equal than thou" and might makes right (majoritarianism, various bandwagon effects our forefathers of democracy warned us about) religious crap seeps into arguments. It's rather predictable. (We should be paying strict attention at this point because dualism like this is part of how you close an open society or how the paradigm of equality, personal accountability, and personal excellence comes under constant attack.)

Generally, it's better to teach people how to think than to tell them their beliefs, religious, political or other, are crazy, im...

Generally, it's better to teach people how to think than to tell them their beliefs, religious, political or other, are crazy, immature, wrong or damned. We do this by example, we do this through informed debate (as opposed to disinformation) and by calling others on logic errors and issues at the **root of their arguments**. This is actually quite difficult since that's precisely the kind of stuff people often don't articulate. It's supposed to remain something we assume, but don't examine, as "the fabric of society." We're supposed to just steep in it until everyone sings the same tune.

Identity. Identity clashes. Identity clashes can become the most idiotic and addictive. They bring out the worst in people. They're like crack...very addictive but they'll damage those who imbibe rather than fight the good fight in the interest of excellence and equality. Most of the more toxic debates based on warring identity groups (Conservative, liberal, democrat, republican, Christian, infidels/heretics, and so on). Theses types of clashes are the worst way to even begin to examine the issues of the day and choice of directional force. Try to inject more informed, well reasoned debate and you may get ignored, insulted, or otherwise attacked.

Dualism and the identity clashes it leads to provides and enables a lot of smoke screens. We might want to think about that....as the middle class shrinks, our education system remains in crappy condition, the rich get richer, and the poorer get poorer while taking the brunt of dysfunctional systems that specialize in doublespeak, distraction, disinformation and...

    Sigh.

Thats why I choose (or atleast try to)to choose the posts I comment on with care, I know just the other day was simply a question of "Do you think such and such" and I said my opinion...and somehow ended up in 3 day argument....with the person forgetting the whole point of the topic. It happens. Most people on this site, whether they are liberal, conservative, atheist, religious, or what ever, will CHOOSE ignorance. It is unfortunately the way things are. But I agree with you one hundred percent.
