To Non-Chrstians: Do you find it annoying when a Christian says they are going to "pray" for you?

I am agnostic and I respect others beliefs, I think that is wonderful that they care enough to take time to say a prayer for you. You don't have to be rude because someone else has faith and uses it. Manners do not know what religion you are or are not.

i honestly dont care if they do or dont, or are just saying it to omake themselves feel good, or make me feel good. of course, most christians (ones who would pray for someone at least) find me offensive and wouldnt tell me something like that anyways, so it doesnt really matter

I don't mind so long as they aren't praying for me to become their belief or for something bad to happen to me. When I'm sick or in a tough spot and they pray for it to get better I find it touching. I'll also pray to my gods for friend if my friend is alright with it.

You need to toughen up your "faith skin" then.

No of course not. Why would it, it is at teh very least saying they will think about you, hope teh best for you and try to bring good things your way... it is an off handed show of "affection".

They know it's not part of my religion and it actually goes against one of the rules of my religion if they do so.

"rules"? okay that seems very unkind, to say the least, to have a religion which finds it a violation to wish goodness on someone...

I could certainly understand your upset if people only say theyw ill pray for you when they find you do not believe as they do, making it a judgement of sorts, but even then I hardly find it insulting when they say such to me knowing what I believe my faith (I do not claim a religion) is not in alignment with theirs... again what they say when they say "I'll pray for you" is they wish you well, hope that you remain strong and find what you seek... unless of course they say i will pray you go to hell which I have had people say to me... but then I dont think there is too great of a hope they are ever going to be happy and less they will be making it to anywhere beyond this life..

They only say they'll pray for me when I don't conform to their religion. Which I find insulting because they are demeaning it to lower standards.
  • cynsity 666_Mag... 2012/06/18 19:41:28
    cynsity
That is a valid way to take it. I certainlt understand how you might find it an insult... but, and maybe this is because I have lived with such for a VERY long time, have you ever considered that to ONLY assume they are demeaning you is to give away your own power in the matter? To allow them to make a judgement against you, and worse to allow their judgement to mean something to you?

I do not conform to anyone "religion", I have my faith, I know what I know and I know what I believe and for me that is the only way to serve the ones who made me. So when people find out I am not a supporter or their dogma and they say they will pray for me I know I serve best by taking it to mean they will will be praying that my faith will remain strong as I "pray" their's will. This way the power stays with me and no doubt can be had about my beliefes.

You need to remember that no one can demean you, insult you, hurt you without your permission. Stop taking what they say to you as a personal insult and you will feel stronger and more sure of what you know and believe.

yeah... and its just as annoying when they act like their education is the only one that was good, their living standards are the only way it should be, the list goes on and on and on but you can't let them get to you so easily...

You have to be willing sometimes to just smile and nod and then forget everything they said as you walk away. The only person who knows what is good and correct for you is YOU. Letting others tell you what is good and correct strips you of your power to choose for yourself and letting what other say change how you want to be does the same... the flip side of this though is it sometimes means you live a quite private life, you do not put your business out there for everyone to judge. You surround yourself with people who are like minded or at least open minded and to everyone else you remain general and stay away from topics which cause contraversy.

I have learned to block it out, as many people from many faiths have offered to pray for me, and many more have threatened me with hell and damnation for asking questions about their faiths after reading the holy scriptures critically.

    It's all relative to me.

I'm Catholic, and there have been times where Protestants, Mormons, Jews, Muslims, and even Buddhists (I live in Japan) have offered to pray for me.

It doesn't annoy me. Why would it?

And why does it annoy you? I've no idea what your religious persuasion is (you listed "other" in your profile) ... but there should be no reason for it to annoy you.

If you have some concept of God, then a prayer on your behalf is simply an offering to ask God to keep you in mind.

On the other hand, if you don't believe in God, the prayer would be utterly meaningless and empty.

I don't know about you, but I don't get annoyed at things that are utterly empty.

Even though I'm not a Christian I know they are. If I'm sick and they say they'll pray for me, I take it as their way of saying "I'm doing what I can to help make sure you get better". Because though I may not believe praying works, it does to them. So I know when they pray for me they're showing they care about me and want me to get better.
It happened when my Mum died. My entire class wrote messages to me. Half of them were along the lines of "praying for your family. Hope you get through it okay".

Unless you mean when a Christian prays for you because you're not Christian...
That's annoying because they're implying something's wrong with you.
