    this would be my guess.
having glasses that do that si fine but you can remove them if you need to see something in the actual ambient light
contacts do not give you that choice and force you to remain and the light level of the shading.
justa guess. the engineering should be there for doing this

There are probably safety issues, too, especially if worn while driving. Most of these lenses have 15-20 second delay in adjusting to ambient light.

technically I do not see any reason why it couldn't be done

It has been a question that has been bugging me for years now so I just had to ask it. The day they so happen to make them though, I will be the first to purchase them...

Are you talking about transition lenses that darken in the light? Or bifocal lenses?

I'm talking about lenses that darken in the light! I've looked every where and haven't gotten an answer on whether or not they were made...

    Here's something I found:

"One company even makes a photochromic contact lens, which acts like photochromic sunglasses: darkening when you go out in the sun and lightening when you go inside. It blocks UV rays and glare. It is not yet available in the United States."

It looks like they haven't received FDA approval yet.

I think the chemistry of the materials use in the transition lenses are not compatible with the materials that can be used for contact lenses, but who knows, maybe somebody will figure out how to do it. Good question, though.

Because the contact is directly against your cornea, there is no room for the contact lens to transition between the two prescriptions

Actually, they do have bifocal contact lenses that remain stationary as the eye moves, similar to glasses.
