First, there was planking. Then, horsemaning. A little after that, owling was born. And now, people have officially combined a crazy, just-because Internet meme with a real-life sports star. Ladies and gentlemen, we introduce to you: tebowing.

If you don't know what tebowing is yet, let us enlighten you. Tim Tebow is the current quarterback for the Denver Broncos. He also happens to be quite religious and tends to get down on one knee and pray from time to time -- even while everyone is watching. So, naturally, people started joining in on the fun and tebowing is now a full-blown internet sensation, with a legitimate website and all.

tim tebow tebowing

What does the star of the new internet meme have to say about it? He's as pleased as can be. "What's funny about it is how rapidly it's caught on, and how much it has taken off," Tebow told press in the Broncos' locker room.

But doesn't he get that most people...are mocking him? Maybe, but Tebow says he tries to focus on the positive part of it. "It's not my job to see peoples' reasons behind it, but I know (of a kid) with cancer that tweeted me, 'Tebowing while I'm chemoing' — how cool is that?" Tebow said. "That's worth it right now. If that gives him any encouragement or puts a smile on his face, or gives him encouragement to pray, that's completely awesome."

Way to keep your head up, Tebow. Or should we say down? Be it religious or just for fun, are you a fan of tebowing?

I don't think it's either hilarious or horrible. I think what this Christian athlete does is wonderful. If people are mocking him then they are morons (jealous morons maybe?) I hope it continues to catch on and taken seriously. I love Tim Tebow!!!!!!
It's my safe guess this kid is going to be a true role model for young kids. How refreshing to have a pro athlete who doesn't do drugs, doesn't sleep with women other than his wife, doesn't find himself in compromising situations which could lead to a rape trial, doesn't drive drunk...etc etc etc.
    tebowing

Keep it up Tim. You are a hero!!!

why didn't you say nice.. didn't you want people to like it? I think it is nice to see someone praying. I would never do it as I believe in praying in private as it can be construed as just trying to look good.. I hope he is sincere. many teams used to pray before every game. I would like to think they still do.

My team (TN Vols) prays midfield after each game. The fans in the stadium also prays before the National Anthem is played before each game.

Phony, self-righteous attention whore... a perfect storm of insecurity,
ego and irony-challenged followers. If this isn't bad enough, we're
actually seeing them CRY like imbeciles at the end of a game.

    "Losing is just... so... hard!"
    WTF, NFL?

You are wrong! He is the son of missionaries and has been a Christian all his life. He played his college ball at Florida, and while he was a rival of my team, Tennessee, he prayed there also and was active in Christian activities. He has my respect in that he is not embarrassed or afraid to live his faith. Crying does not indicate someone is an imbecile, but your post does.

So, as the son of missionaries, he should know better than to pray over
a FOOTBALL GAME when there are starving children with AIDS being
crushed to death in landslides all over the planet at any given moment.

    First-World "Christian" priorities, eh? ,':O\

Crying does, indeed, mark someone as an imbecile. When you lose,
you congratulate your opponents and try to do better next time. Period.
That's the sort of character that underpins sporting events everywhere.
    Somehow, you've missed this. Boo-hoo-hoo. :O)

Liberaltard philosophers often assume they know more than they do. Our team prays before a game, but it is to ask for safety and protection for all athletes on both teams. If liberals prayed before a game, I'm sure it would be a win with multiple injuries on the opposing team. Arrogant judges often judge incorrectly as well. Who put you in their heads that you can say that they don't pray for others and starving children? You are an arrogant and judgmental individual who must not have any faith of your own so you disparage those who do. Crying identifies imbeciles? Amazing, you must cry daily.

For me, it's Right vs Left-- not Right vs Wrong. People lean the way they do for reasons that entertainers like Michael Savage neither know nor understand. He *has* to advance such rhetoric, sensible or not, because it puts food on his table.

There are lots more like him on the Left, yammering about the pathological paranoia of the Right.

As a Fiscal Conservative, my foremost concern lies in protecting my livelihood. Way after this, come the "social" issues. If my views on religion and/or the NFL mark me as a Liberal in your eyes, you're the one with the disorder.

His prayers don't seem to be helping much, do they?
Maybe he goes to the wrong church. XD

I never played ball in school. Boxed half-assed in college

I lost. It wasn't fashionable back then.

PI thinks the whole matter is a Liberal/Conservative rift. Not a clue
as to the obvious attention whoring going on. No idea that crying after
a loss amounts to bad sportsmanship.

People like this think *everything* is a reason for political yammering.

If you knew Tim Tebow, you would know that he wore the eye patches all the time...most of the time his helmet was on and no one could even see it. I remember this pic, but I can't remember the game...maybe his last game as a Gator, and his emotions got the best of him...what difference does it make??

Losing gracefully is central to good sportsmanship. If you can't understand this, there's not much else I can tell you.

I understand good sportsmanship completely. What part of disappointment with yourself do you not understand? What part of the emotion of playing in your last collegiate game, or the emotion of working so hard for something and failing, or seeing your dreams dashed do YOU not understand??? You show a picture, with no explanation...pretty crummy of you. I watch college and some pro football and basketball, and I have seen many players sad and shedding a tear on the sidelines. Shame on you for picking on one person.

I pick on *any* athlete who doesn't understand good sportsmanship: the US Olympic hockey team, Tonya Harding, George Brett, Mike Tyson, the Raiders of the 90's, coaches screaming obscenities at the refs, milling around and grabbing crotches during a pop rendition of the National Anthem, batters screaming at umpires, endzone dancers, Charles Barkley actually *spitting* on someone...

We do not bring this crap to sporting contests.

And these things ALWAYS escalate-- one year it's a swat on the butt, a fist bump, a pat on the back, a hug... and now we have boxers hugging *and* kissing in the ring. Might not want to see what next year will bring. Simple solution: touch gloves and box. Take the cuddling and genuflecting somewhere besides the boxing ring.

The whole 'taunting' thing had to be contained because players started stashing PROPS in the end zones to parade back and forth to celebrate their Great Emotional Triumphs.
Solution: ban it, everything like it, and enforce the ban.

This season's tears of despair will catch on and they'll ALL be doing it next year. Thee years from now, we'll have full-fledged tantrums on the field because that's how these things evolve. And even if they don't, for some reason, stop the crying crap and play the game properly.

We're taught all of these things from our early grade school years. What part of this was so hard to learn along with all the other boys and girls back then?

Just saying... I don't care for the direction they're going with most sports these days. You like it-- fine. To me, it feels like it's losing respect for its audience.

Still missing the point. You wouldn't recognize good sportsmanship in the stadium *or* on the television
because you don't place any value on it.

You seem to view it as entertainment, with no regard
for the honor of The Sport. Sportsmanship pervades
society at all levels, and its degradation shouldn't be
    taken lightly.

I know that nobody's going to make you understand this,
but I gave it a good shot, anyway.
  • texasred sockpuppet 2011/11/01 22:48:15 (edited)

You don't know me, so don't attribute your lesser values to me.

And you don't make the rules as to what good sportsmanship is or is not.

Crying is not a measure of bad sportsmanship. It's a measure of an athlete's love of the sport. A measure of the pain they feel for losing and their team losing. Just because you're a neanderthal doesn't mean all football players should be neanderthals. I appreciate the fact that they have feelings and are willing to let their fans see them.

Obviously no one is going to make YOU understand this. But... I gave it a good shot, anyway.

Oh, sockpuppet... you were so afraid of the truth that you had to block me? What kind of sportmanship is that? Yep... just like I thought. All show and no go.
