Repeated spankings can be harmful because it can quickly turn into abuse. I think that the humiliation factor is more harmful, than the actual spanking though. Personally, I would never strike a child. Parents should not teach their children that hitting one another is a way to solve problems or dole out punishments.

The feeling of helplessness and violation is the problem with spanking. Perhaps it is not as bad if the child is allowed to keep their pants and underpants on.

I think most parents spanked ( or gave a mild slap) at least once when their child did something life threatening like running in the street, or reaching to touch a hot stove. If you grew up in the 1950's, 60's or 70's, a little bit was the norm. Certainly not the extreme. But, to equate intelligent thinking Democrats to spanking issues? That's a stretch. If you want to find a problem with spanking too much look to the right wing Christians who take "Spare the rod, spoil the child" way too seriously and follow the Bible to the letter of the law.( Way beyond what the church says.) They are the ones who spank too much, not conservatives or liberals on either side.
