I think Hayden Christiansen is what killed it for us sw fans. Paris Hilton would have been a better dearth vader. And st got Patrick Stuart and William shatner. I mean c'mon I will always like and respect st for what it is. But I saw the phantom menace when I was like 10 and the sight of ewan mc Gregor slicing an evil alien dude played by ray park (who is an actual ninja) in half with a lightsaber and I was hooked.
Star Wars is great! However, it is really limited in scope. It is the fall of a republic to a tyrannical empire and the rebels cause. Oh yeah, and then there is the force. Also, it is "A long time ago in a galaxy far far away."
One the other hand you have Star Trek, which is all about exploration of the universe and the human condition. It explores topics that we concern ourselves with today. It gives us ideas that we can look forward to in our future with an optimistic outlook on how we could solve problems that we currently face. The modern flip phone was even inspired from Star Trek.
In summary Star Wars is IMHO a single event/ conflict. Star Trek is an ongoing look into the expedition through space and humanity.
Star Trek was the first that seemed to put forth the idea that earthlings and beings from elsewhere might actually be able to get along. Sometimes, even the alien 'monsters' weren't really monsters at all, which was different than usual. As you so aptly state: It's the gold standard to which all others aspire. Without Star Trek, there would have been no Star Wars.
Yeppers, although the first StarTrek movie almost ruined the franchise...sheez, that movie could have been compressed into a 30 minute TV show...that movie moved so slow that when it came out I fell asleep in the movie theater....the novelty of seeing a bald woman didn't hold my interest at all....
The first movie was horrible. There is no way to pretty it up. The special effects guys were so in love with the new computer enhancements that what should have ended up on the cutting room floor ended up on the screen. The whole storyline was weak. Though I don't mind men who may be follicly challenged, a bald woman just didn't quite make it.
They were trying to catch on to the Star Wars coattails and really just didn't think through the script. They forgot to remember that humor mixed with adventure was what made the show so memorable.
I watched all of the Star Wars remakes when I was little but I don't remember them that well and I don't remember ever really getting into them. I've seen one of the original Star Treks (The Voyage Home) and it's pretty good. I LOVE the one from 2009 though
Such a difficult decision, but ultimately influence by the fact that Star Trek only has one prequel while Star Wars has three prequels and Jar-Jar Binks.
Way to many of the things we have seen come true in the Star Trek series, especially the ST:TOS that I can hardly wait to see if someone actually does come up with a warp drive system in this century.
They are both OK .
