New: Auto-Bleep Profanity Filter

At SodaHead, we do our best to quickly moderate abusive language and links that violate our Terms of Service. But as we continue to grow, it's becoming harder to keep up. In an effort to keep SodaHead a clean, safe community for all, tonight we're unrolling a new automatic profanity filter!

About the Profanity Filter

This new tool will catch abusive language immediately and add asterisks into the word, to keep the gist without mucking up the streets of SodaHead.

Some words/phrases will get the bleep-treatment automatically (like the 7 words you can't say on TV, variations of them, dangerous links, etc), while some less offensive words will be bleeped depending on how many are used, based on a point system. Please don't try to score points. Bleeping is not a game.

This tool was built thanks to the requests and comments of users like you. We welcome your continued feedback as we evolve the filter to help keep SodaHead a place to express your opinions in a safe environment!

UPDATE 3/09/10:
This feature was changed to allow people to choose to see profanity or not. You can adjust your settings here under Profanity Settings.
You!

As my message above indicates your new "filter" is a joke.
    Try again.

This stupid idea comes from advertisers who pay the bills to keep the servers running and the engineers paid. We also get lots of complaints from people who want to protect their children from profanity (like they don't hear it at home, school or TV).

The advertisers i can understand and I do apologize i mean I saw an option to choose whether or not to place the restriction on your site or not and I'm grateful for that. The parents.... with all do respect there are a number of over protective parents that shield their children from to much. Not saying they dont have the right to, heck I'm the last person to come to for advise on raising kids. just was upset to here it at the time.

It's a shame that something like this is even deemed necessary. It used to be most people outgrew the need to use profanity as they left their teen years, when they thought using profanity made them sound more grown up. Most of us developed a broader vocabulary and better communication skills as we matured, I guess that's not the case any more.

"like the 7 words you can't say on TV...."

One of the benefits of the internet is we are not restricted by the FCC. But if Sodahead wants to censor instead...

doesn't work in groups because people chose to belong to the group and its policies moderated by the group owner.

I see, thank you. I've since seen it work on Blogs and Questions. I'm most grateful to have that choice!

I've personally found it ridiculous how we've no problem know what word one is referencing, but goodness, we mustn't actually *read* it. This attitude only provides to embolden the words through a superstitious avoidance rather than actually trying to clean up anything.

While I've no idea the difficulties in coding such a program, what about a pop-up that suggests/requests/requires people to amend their language, maybe based on the settings of the particular poll or blog?

All said and done, I do adore my Saxonry, but my grandmother had a point: What difference does it make, telling someone to have sex with themselves? They hear a dozen times a day. It has no effect. If you want the person you disagree with them and you wish them ill, tell them you hope their children are born without feet or something to that extent.
