October 13, 1307, a Friday. The Knights Templar were rounded up, imprisoned, and all their worldly goods confiscated by King Phillip of France. This was after they had restored him to the throne. Most of them were executed.
Friday the 13th has had an unlucky reputation ever since.

Actually the number 13 became known as an unlucky number solely because of the 13th card of the major arcana of the tarot, the death card, while this card is used solely to represent change and is in itself neither good nor bad the early Europeans feared death so much that they simply couldn't accept this and so the they declared the number 13 to be unlucky.

Burning Bright Embers has it right! October 13, 1307 is when King Phillip of France rounded up, imprisoned, tortured and executed The Knights Templar, confiscating their lands and most of their wealth held in France.

Some people believe that it has to do with Oct 13 1307 - mass arrest of the Templars in France.

On Friday the 13 the Pope and the King of France declared war on the Knights Templar and went around gathering them up and executing them. Ever since then Friday the 13 has been unlucky and the number 13 has been considered unlucky.

It has to do with Friday the 13th and that was the date when the King of France went after the Knight Templars and since that number and date has been considered unlucky.

I don't get it. Because Judas was Jesu's closes friend and even though some people think Judas was the betrayer, others believe that Judas willingly took the job of turning Jesus in so that the prophecy could be fulfilled. Which is why he kissed Jesus right before. They had a pact. Even Lloyd Webber picked up on that in Jesus Christ Superstar. And the recently discovered "gospel of Judas" alludes to it as well.

I was raised Catholic and I was told that the reason it's 'unlucky' was that there were originally 13 disciples of Jesus and one left him and was damned. Idk, that's what I got and it makes sense since it really came about in the Dark Ages when everyone was very religious.

.There have been a number of events known as "Black Fridays" in history. Usually, these events are devastating.

Some historians propose that the origin of the "Black Friday" was the simultaneous arrest of hundreds of Knights Templars on October 13, 1307 (Friday), to be later tortured into "admitting" heresy.

Today, the concept of Friday the 13th has been extended through the 'black Friday' concept to incorporate anything really bad that happens on a Friday. In history there have been a number of events that happened on a Friday and are known as Black Friday:

Black Friday (1869), a financial crisis in the United States
Black Friday (1889), the day of the Johnstown Flood.
Black Friday (1910), WSPU took militant action when the Conciliation Bill failed.
Black Friday (1919), a riot in Glasgow stemming from industrial unrest
Black Friday (1921), day on which British dockers' and railwaymen's union leaders announced their decision not to call for strike action against wage reductions for miners
Black Friday (1929), a stock market crash in the United States
Black Friday (1939), a day of devastating fires in Australia

The Dutch Centre for Insurance Statistics (CVS) on June 12, 2008, stated that "fewer accidents and reports of fire and theft occur when the 13th of the month falls on a Friday than on other Fridays, because people are preventatively more careful or just stay home. Statistically speaking, driving is slightly safer on Friday the 13th, at least in the Netherlands; in the last two years, Dutch insurers received reports of an average 7,800 traffic accidents each Friday; but the average figure when the 13th fell on a Friday was just 7,500......

Actually it was a tradition for all witches covens to have13 members to function appropriately, but usually this was as many let into a single 'coven' it didn't mean that the covens didn't interact.

Just found this on a website.
Many people believe that Friday the 13th is an unlucky day, that the 13th floor of a building is unlucky, or that the number 13 in general is unlucky. No one seems to know exactly why this came to be so, but there are many possible explanations.

One is that the superstition goes back to the Last Supper. There were 13 people at the meal, including Jesus Christ, and Judas was thought to be the 13th guest.

In some ancient European religions, there were 12 good gods and one evil god; the evil god was called the 13th god. And a meeting of witches, called a Sabbath, required at least 13 witches.

Friday has also long been considered unlucky, perhaps because Christ died on Friday. Since Friday and the number 13 are both considered unlucky, then Friday the 13th is considered the unluckiest day of all!
