More is likely to go wrong with birth control then cough medicine. People should be safe when taking it and know how to use it. If it was prescription free we'd have a lot of younger girls especially taking it improperly and screwing themselves up or using it ineffectively thinking they're protected from pregnancy when they aren't.

As with any medication, there are too many risk that need to be watched and monitored by your physician. Everyday, we see lawsuits for drug companies and a medication and one does include a birth control. Learn how to use safe sex or practice abstinence.

That's not something you can just take willy-nilly. I think it should be cheaper, but should stay prescription-only. It has side-effects and needs to be compared to whatever else you are taking or your specific lifestyle.

There are some like myself who have to be extremely careful when taking ANY medication, because of my Epilepsy.
When I was younger and was on birth control, I wasn't aware that birth control pills would be affected by my seizure meds until my doctor told me.

but don't you think a pharmacists can do the same thing without clogging up Drs. offices for it? Some girls might talk to a pharmacists where they can't talk to a Dr without getting a parent involved.

But I think it's best to have some kind of appointment with a professional, either your doctor or the pharmacist, just to know you're using the right one.
As someone below said, different pills are better for different things. If you want it for birth control, to help with acne, to help with your period, or whatever, there'll be different pills that work better.
I don't think you should need a prescription, but I'd recommend seeing someone before you buy, to make sure it's going to be effective.
