You can go to war and die for your country, but you cannot legally consume alcohol?

    Yup, that makes sense.

It may be an old argument but it is a very true statement. Has raising the age to 21 deterred young people from drinking alcohol no. Shoot most young people by the time they reach 21 have drunk so much that being 21 is just another birthday. If you have been to college the amount of under age drinking that is going on would have 2/3 of those college students in jail. We would really have over crowding then. Granted the number I threw out is speculation. I would imagine it is closer to the truth then most would imagine.

Hell, I agree with you but that doesn't mean it's right. I would speculate also that the same people that have drank underage have also smoked pot, taken other drugs and have done other things that are against the law. Does this mean that pot and other drugs should also be legal? My whole point is that not everyone is the same and each in my opinion should be treated differently but this will never happen so our system is set up not to deal with any of them legally until 21. I lived in Japan for 5 years and they had alcohol machines on the streets like we have coke machines. People always told me that these cultures don't have problems because they don't have age restrictions for drinking but what I witnessed for 5 years was not what I was told but even worse. Each week I saw young kids passed out in the streets and pucking everywhere. Accidents are almost nil only because these people ride the train and take taxi's not because they can drink and drive.

I think in the long run it makes more responsible adults! The gov is out to just drive kids nuts! Take away anything to let you get your brain back on track so you can find shit that will actually kill you because there's nothing else left to take the edge off! It was 18 when I turned 18 and shorly there after it went to 21! Stupid!

Tell you, in Wisconsin we kept the beer companies in biz, lol and it kept the economy good! Harmless fun! Like anything there's going to be people who are going to abuse it. But that doesn't stop 18 year olds from figuring out some where to get booze. Why not let them buy it for themsleves? After a year I got over myself and calmed down. Lol, I had fun buying what ever the hell I wanted to and had fun in the bars. Then I got tired of it and realized that there was more to life. But you have to get in and get your ya ya's out and experience life and have fun. Get the lows and then you can level out! But if someone is always taking something away from you then you are always chasing it. realized life ya yas experience life fun lows level chasing

Nope, not everyone is the same and there's nothing you can do to change that. But for the most part I do believe that kids in this day and age are more mature. Fact, they are doing things that are way worse for them than alcohol. Everyone needs an outlet and I also believe that the moral state of our nation doesn't help how kids are turning out these days either. Give em a little credit, I think that's what a lot of the problem out there for kids right now is. They've got to start growing at some point in their life and I think the earlier the better.

Skitter, do you realize you just used the word KIDS THREE times. Not once did you use the word adult because you probably know that this is what these kids are, kids. And the reason why kids do get alcohol and other "Outlets" as you say is because their parents don't give a shit of what they are doing. If a kid needs an outlet, he or she needs more help than what alcohol can do for them.

Kids who are working towards adulthood, do you believe that the word kid is a bad one? Problem in this country has become that the adults are asking these poor kids to grow up a little too fast. Give them their time, life is too short to ask them to do it over night. Give a kid the time he or she needs to grow up and I believe that most will do a fine job. I happen to like the word kid because it brings back memories of simpler times.

Times when we weren't taxed with all the crap that's floating about out there today. The stresses of life are bringing everyone down and you can't tell me that there isn't a point when we all need a damn break! Everything in moderation for the most part is generally good. How do we learn to have moderation if we don't at first burn ourselves out and realize that there is a stopping point? Yeah, I know you are going to tell me that not everyone is like that. For the most part most people are. Moral substance and better values in society will help a child develop and a kid is a kid until he grows from the inside out not the reverse.

Age has nothing to do with that, it's upbringing and yes I'll go along with you when it comes to parents not giving enough to their kids in some instances and that is what I am talking about here also. But there's a...

But there's a time when you have to give a kid the keys to the car and let him drive him or herself out of the desires that if kept from them make them worse than if they were left to do what you know they will do when given the chance anyway. The longer you drag this out the harder it can be for some people as well. As far as needing help, you are going really over board here, that goes on an as needed basis, just because someone likes to drink every now and then doesn't mean they are going off the deep end.

One person may need alcohol from time to time as an outlet and then another's alcohol may be cigaretts and another's may be tv or video games. As long as you can keep it to a point where it doesn't rule your life that is what I am talking about. There's no need to get melodramatic over this issue, people are going to do what they are going to do. I will close this up with again, life is too short to waste it waiting to be able to do something. Let people learn earlier so that when they get past the hurdle there's some life left to live. Alcohol is a responsibility and the sooner you can learn that the better off you will be and the sooner you will realize what is important in life. If a parent does a lousy job in raising their kids then they are to blaim, not the alcohol or cigerettes or what ever it may be.

I think it should be 25, that's the age proven that your brain is fully developed. There'd be more wrecks, alchoholics and mortality rates.

Teens can't handle things like alchohols, heck 21 year olds cant really either. I go bakc to what I said, that it should be RAISED to 25. Good day. http://www.wpclipart.com/sign...

I guess what i'm trying to say is that I could care less if an 18 year old that is risking his life for his country has a beer but the 2 have zero to do with each other. But what your argument is that if you are a soldier you should be able to drink. Is this correct? So how about all of the kids that are still in high school at 18 should they be able to drink? Kids these days son't have the same responsibilities they did years ago and in California most kids don't even get a drivers license until they are 18 because they don't need it or even want it for that matter. Kids are are exactly that, kids, and until they can show that they are responsible adults I have to go with the 21 year old law.

You have the right to die, but you cant drink a beer? Does that really make sense to you? You're acting like alcohol is such a privilege. Its not even that great, and honestly, its terrible for you. It actually kills you anyways. So the simple fact you can die fighting for your country, but you cant enjoy a beer, makes absolutely no sense to me.

If you want to keep it at 21, raise the military age to 21 too then.

I guess you are just missing the whole point because your answer is still not a complete answer. You argument is that because an 18 year old can die for his or her country they should be able to drink alcohol. But my argument back is what does drinking alcohol and dying for your country have to do with one another? Do you think the military are out in the field drinking beers and shooting rifles at the same time. Do you think aircraft carriers have bars for the soldiers to relax while on break. NO. Learn to be a man before you can become a man and that takes time not because you are now in the military. BTW, how many 18 year olds are even in the military out of all of the 18 year olds in this country.

Its a simple thinking, maybe thats the problem why you cant grasp it. Drinking is a enjoyment privilege thats granted upon age 21. Military can be mandatory if draft is in effect, which anyone between the ages of 18-25 are PRIME. The simplest fact: If you are OLD ENOUGH to serve, or die for your country, you should be OLD enough, to enjoy that countries privileges.

You're not old enough to join the military at 15, you cant drink either, or smoke cigarettes. That makes sense.

At 18, you can give yourself lung cancer and smoke several packs of cigarettes a day. You can go to strip clubs (but only ones that dont serve alcohol!(WTF?!)). Yet, you cant give yourself sclerosis of the liver, by drinking a gallon a day. That DOESN'T make sense.

Why allow one and not the other? They're both bad for you, and both privileges you gain after becoming an adult.

Heres a better answer summed up in dummy terms for you:

18 = Adult = Responsible for ones self.

Thus, after being 18 all wrong choices you make, are YOUR fault, and you are at the mercy of the full extent of the law.
Thus, being 18 should grant all privileges.

Obviously the dummy terms are for someone else because i understand your argument but I don't agree with it. Smoking cigarettes doesn't impair your brain when you are driving a car or shooting a gun but alcohol does. Just because someone turns 18 doesn't mean they are now ready to pour alcohol down their bodies, hell, i know 21 year olds that can't. Ever since the they changed the law to 21 car wrecks and other accidents with alcohol have gone WAY down so obviously it was a good thing. Face it, were not in a draft system right now so it's a CHOICE to be in the military and I'm pretty sure those KIDS going into enlist aren't thinking about drinking a beer because they are now in the military. Hell, in the state of Florida back in the early 90's they banned an alcohol called Tuacca because the older crowd loved it and it would crush them out at early dinner and they were killing people left and right. Do you think these people should be able to drink what they want? The whole point is that just because someone enlists in the military doesn't give them the right to be able to get drunk on one beer and kill someone on the road. These are teen agers that have to grow up and be men 1st. Hell, that's one of the reasons a lot of them go to the military.

Like you said, theres 21 year olds who cant handle their alcohol. Most people get the urge to drink alcohol early, between 15-20. I know from personal experience after 21, people grow up and either:

    A) stop drinking completely
    B) socially drink, but responsibly
    C) Are drunken idiots with fat beer bellies who drink beer all day long, even at work and are a waste of space.

Most of it falls back on the parents on teaching their children responsibility, moderation, and consequences of taking the wrong action.
