I had several jobs as a teen: worked for the local Fuller Brush salesman; worked setting pins in a bowling alley; worked at The Washington Post doing inserts; had two paper routes and worked for CIA as a contract employee...all before I was 20

it's a good introduction to 'real' life and allows them to have more experience and better prospects when they come to find a full time job in the future

Better teach them how to handle money instead of always relying on your parents. You won't die of a little work in your life.

... as long as they can balance it with school and other priorities. If their grades start to slip, they should give up the PT job.

I know times have changed, but I had my first two jobs at 13. I worked at the Tahoe Trout Farm and Dick Bournique Mobil on Lake Tahoe Blvd (Hwy 50) and Johnson Ave. Kept steady work until I retired from the Marines.

My vote is more like an undecided. Really it depends on the individual some teens need all their focus on schoolwork whilst some are able to manage a part time job on the side, then there's the rare person like myself who can work a fulltime nightshift job and pass highschool not everybody is the same.

Considering that teen years go until the person turns 20, then yes. However, there are circumstances that may make it difficult for a younger teen to work. I definitely think teens are capable of working and shouldn't have anything handed to them. I was 18 when I got my first job. I didn't work at all throughout high school because I had no means of transportation. I went to school in a very small country town where there was no public transportation. I stayed with my dad and he worked 3rd shift and was unable to drive me to or from a job. He also didn't believe in working while still being in school. He would give me lunch money each week, but I thought school lunches were too expensive for how awful they tasted, so I would keep the money to pay for things I needed/wanted. I got a job after I graduated (5 years ago), and I've been at the same job since.

This is how I see it:
If they have the capability to keep a part time job and keep up with school work (assuming they are still in school), then it can only help things. These days, a degree in college doesn't always cut it for a job, especially something career-based. Employers want experience! The more experience you can rack up, the better. It looks good on resumes and college applications to have good grades and work experience. If they can handle it, it increases their chances of a successful future.

I'm a teen and I'm looking for a part time job for the summer. I'm going to college this fall and I can't expect my parents to pay for every little thing for me. They are both in debt anyway. But I believe adults that are unemployed should get hired before teens.

That way when they think they need one certain brand of any given item and no other brand will be accepted they can pay for it themselves. I had jobs while in school and so will my kids. I will also start charging them "rent" when they have a job. Two reasons the money is going into a savings account that they won't know about until they are 18 and graduating from high school. The other reason is so I can see which one will be able to truly manage their money and which one will need a little help with managing their money.
