Not unless its like, college professors and students. Even then, it might be awkward. Should probably wait until you're graduated because not a lot of professors are cool like that, though some will definitely surprise you with meme references in class and whatnot. At least from my experience they have xD

I think it just depends. I'm friends with my band teacher on facebook, but he's really more of a student than a teacher; he allows pretty much anything and he's a lot younger than almost all of the other teachers at my high school. But if my algebra teacher tried to add me, I would decline her faster than you could say 'Quidditch.'

not until after they have graduated. I attended a tech school after high school and our instructor was friends with a few girls in our program on facebook. He was later accused of sleeping with one of the girls and supossibly black mailed by the girls boyfriend, he was then forced to quit. There was an investigation and we never found out what really happend but our program went without an instructor for a little over a month and the school would not let us withdraw. It was a mess.

And I would go one further... Do not friend your co-workers. YOU can control who you are friends with but you CAN'T control who their friends are.

Probably not but teachers should be aware that some students love to friend their teachers. And if they accept, maybe keep the "private" type pics on another site?

    There's some things .. like this ..
(teacher and their now students) being friends on social network sites ..

That may, in fact .. be innocent enough ..
    but ..

There's always going to be the suspicion ..
    is it SOME-thing .. else instead ..
(perhaps, perhaps not .. but best to avoid the uncomfortable questions)

it is best to be cautious ..
and NOT befriend your students (teachers) ..
and teachers .. do not befriend your students ..

Absolutely not. There needs to be a distinct separation between students and teachers. It's unprofessional for teachers to "friend" students.

Actually, my old high school administration banned teachers from doing that. It's not professional. Once the student graduates and is a legal adult who isn't bound to the school system, then teachers are/should be allowed to add them as friends.

It depends on many things. As an elementary school teacher I had lots of students who wanted to be friends with me on facebook. My facebook account was quite benign so I did it for awhile. Another teacher I worked with had a good idea. She created a second account just for being friends with students. Again, these are elementary school kids who mostly want to play games, be silly and the usually have other adults from their lives as friends on facebook too-parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents. I have not used facebook in years. I got quite bored with it.

not while they are still your teacher. i think it's another one of those boundaries that just shouldnt be crossed.

once you have left that particular establishment, i don't see why not. i am friends (in real life, not just facebook), with a handful of teachers that i have had over the years and now, they're just like any other friend i have made since leaving school. they were important to me at school/sixth form and helped me through a lot. one was even part of the same parent/toddler group as me and our children now go to school together. our relationship now is different to when i was at school, but just because they WERE my teacher doesn't mean i shouldn't be friends with them now.

Certain boundaries I don't think should pass. I would wait until after you have passed their class.

I wouldn't say they 'SHOULD' but they 'CAN' Big difference. But it depends on the situation. Having a friendship with your favorite teacher because you admired how they taught and they were your favorite is different from adding a hot teacher because you're a perv/stalker.

If we could reduce just a little the amount of high school student child/teacher sex the world would be a better place.

It depends on how the teachers use their facebook. If they decide to accept students' friends requests, they will have to keep their page clean. No drunken party pictures and that kind of thing.

I think it depends on the age group. Highschoolers and younger should probably avoid friending their teachers, and visa versa.

However I am friends with teachers I HAD in high school, and friends with one of my college professors. He didn't friend me until AFTER I finished taking his class, and apparently if you take another class with him he will unfriend you for the duration of the class. I think that is an interesting approach and it seems to work well.

It seems pretty convenient that a student can ask for the teacher's help 24/7.
